Never trump your partner's ace
Euchre games hosted every other Monday by Larry's Town and Country Tavern
Heather Mir T -A staff
CREDITON - Coordinators Nola
Lewis and Als'inna Galloway, have
been organizing euchre games in
Crediton for the past two years.
The turnout is usually excellent
and there is no doubt the par-
ticipants have a great time.
"I think that they really enjoy
themselves," said Gal-
loway.
Every other Monday,
Larry's Town and
Country restaurant
hosts di average of 54
people in a progressive
euchre game. There
are approximately 13
table of four people
playing cards bi-monthly.
A partner is not required and any-
one is welcome to Come out to en-
joy spending an afternoon with
people who have a common inter-
est.
It is not the prize money which
only reaches •$I for the high lone
hand, but rather -the company which
makes these euchre afternoons such
a success.
In addition to cards, the players
usually have their evening meal
while they are out.
The cards are
supplied at no cost
to players and when
funds run short for
prizes, Lewis and
Galloway take up a
collection.
This group of
card playets sched-
ule their afternoons on opposite
Mondays to Heywood Country Res-
taurant which also hosts euchre
games.
"I think that
they really
enjoy
themselves."
The game started in Crediton
when the original Heywood res-
taurant burned down several years
ago.
Now the euchre games continue
at both restaurants and people can
play every Monday if they desirq.
Euchre is a trump card game for
two or four players using 24 of the
highest cards of a standard 52 -card
deck. When four people play, 32
cards are used.
Each player is dealt five cards
face down; the next card is turned
face up and the players in turn ac-
cept or reject the turned card's suit
as trump. Once a player accepts.
the dealer takes the turned card and
replaces it with one from her hand.
When trump is determined, the jack
of that suit becomes the highest
trump or right bower, and the jack
of the same -colored suit or left
bower, becomes the second-highest
trump.
To win, the player or partners
who names the trump suit must col-
lect at least three of the five tricks
in the play of one hand. If not suc-
cessful, she is euchred. When one
side wins all five tricks, it scores a
march, worth two points. A game
is usually played to a total of five
points.
Euchre is a descended from a
short, simple 16th -century card
game called triomphe. Other
trump -card games which have
evolved from triomphe include
whist, escarte and bridge.
With the success this community
event has received it will probably
continue for years to come. For
seniors especially, it is an activity
which combines a social outing
with a little friendly competition.
