began his performing career as a Maritime folk musician in 1974.
One-man comedy show
witty, refreshing
Brenda Burke T -A staff
The first thing you'll notice about
stand-up comedian Lorne Elliott is
his hair - a dark, thick, curly mass
cut in a strange shape lacking bangs
and all poofed out at the sides. On a
tall, gangly character like Elliott,
hair like this is comic in itself, in
fact it's nearly clown -like.
But it's not as if Elliott uses his
hair as a prop for his comic gig.
True, he does impressions with the
help of his hair and true, he in-
advertently (or purposely) messes it
up from time to time while de-
livering his witty, Canadian -
inspired jokes and songs. But El-
liott never overly depends on his
hair, or for that matter, his guitar,
his only two props on stage, to
make people laugh.
Elliott alone is the comic prop.
When his face contorts to reflect
his style of hard rock guitar playing
and when his long arms and legs
flail madly while telling a story, we
laugh as a pure, slap -stick reaction.
But there's much more to the
man's comedy than how he looks
or expresses himself. Representing
a wild deviation from typical bar
room dirty -mouthed comics who
lean on rehashed one-liners and a
couple of front -row audience guin-
ea pigs, Elliott is nothing of the
sort. He's witty. He's original.
And, he's very funny. Not the kind
of funny that hits you and immedi-
ately disperses like an empty
knock -knock joke, but a deep, cyn-
ical, chuckling funny that starts in
your belly and makes its way to
tickle your brain long into the next
joke.
Not only is Elliott funny, he's fast
- lightening fast. Understandably,
he demands a quick audience while
he sincerely performs some of the
raciest, corniest phrases you've
ever heard. Because Elliott is big
on word play, don't be surprised
when he belts out A New National
Anthem, an unexpected twist on
Canadian landmarks and don't be
alarmed when he delivers a mish-
mash of hilarious vocabulary as
quick and smooth as an auctioneer.
Most importantly, Elliott is tal-
ented and quick enough to use un-
expected audience reactions as part
of his act. When a woman in the
front row laughs hysterically at
every word and action, Elliott is
quick to jump in and incorporate
her raucous behaviour into the
show.
"She's not paid," he tells the audi-
ence, looking innocent and be-
wildered.
Throughout his 90 -minute show
Elliott keeps in touch with his audi-
ence in down-to-earth, intelligent
style. One second he reminds you
of a guy guzzling beer around a
campfire, the next he flashes
glimpses of intellect that marry
charm and talent.
Entertaining Canadians, Amer-
icans and Australians since 1981,
Elliott adds screenplays, television
comedies, skits and revues to his
performance schedule of 250 shows
a year. He's opened for Jay Leno
and Rodney Dangerfield and has
founded 'Free Beer,' a 1978 mu
sical comedy that toured eastern
Canada. His Really Quite Half De-
cent TV Show aired on CBC TV in
1992. He also performs yearly at
the Montreal Just For Laughs Com-
edy Show.
Elliott's one-man comedy show,
Collected Mistakes, may be ex-
perienced at the Huron Country
Playhouse from July 3 to July 13.
His Ontario tour will then take
him to Picton, Jackson Point, Port
Carling and Lakefield where he'll
spread his wit and humour.
Hay Days '96 a success
ZURICH - Thank you from Hay
Days '96. The fundraising and pro-
motional committees were over-
whelmed with the response to our
requests. This shows great commu-
nity spirit and drive for co-
operation and fellowship. It also
shows we all care and appreciate
our heritage and the hard work of
the pioneers who established Hay
township and its villages and ham-
'ets within.
We wish to thank all businesses
and individuals who donated gra-
ciously in products, services and
cash donations.
We could not have had a success-
ful event without everyone who
purchased barbecue tickets and the
auctioned items, local auctioneers
and clerks, master of ceremonies
and sound system, newspapers, lo-
cal cable channels, radio -TV com-
munications. We are grateful for
the use of Hay township council
chambers for our meeting place
each month, volunteers of the com-
mittees, township council and arena
staff.
