Exeter Fury tie
one, lose one
EXETER - The Exeter Fury were
in action twice last week, tying St.
Thomas 3-3 and losing to the Lati-
nos 5-0. Thursday in St. Thomas
the Fury started quickly with Jeff
Lingard firing a shot under the
crossbar for a 1-0 lead in the first
couple of minutes. The rest of the
half belonged to the home team as
St. Thomas put three goals past
goalkeeper Randy MacDonald. The
Fury defensemen were caught leav-
ing their men on a couple of occa-
sions which produced goals for St.
Thomas.
The second half belonged to Ex-
eter as the Fury staged a comeback
for the first time this year. Dan
Martens sent Dave Maguire in
alone and he beat the charging
goalie to cut the lead to 3-2. The
goal seemed to spark the Fury as
they narrowly missed on a couple
of other opportunities. Exeter tied
the game and once again Maguire
was the catalyst as he was tripped
inside the box resulting in a penalty
shot that Lingard finished off clean-
ly.
Saturday in London had the Lati-
nos showing why they are in a bat-
tle for first place in the east divi-
sion. The 5-0 loss was the Fury's
worst of the year and came against
a team Exeter had beaten at the
start of this season. The Fury
played a solid first half in front of
replacement goalie Dave Boersma
but were down 1-0 at the half.
Ryan Hern took the net for the
second half but was left alone nu-
merous times to face the Latino
shooters from close range. As the
Fury pressed for goals, players
were caught out of position result-
ing in many clear scoring chances
for the Latinos.
"We did not pass the ball around
well. When we learn to spread out
on the field, that's when we will
have some success against the good
teams," said Fury coach Jason
McFal Is.
The Fury's record is currently 5-
4-2. Their next game is Sunday,
July 16 at the Canner's against Dor-
chester.

Centennials win
seven straight
EXETER - The Centennial's have increased their winning streak
to seven games in a row with a 3-1 victory over the Falcons on Sun-
day.
Nick Szabo continues to be a scoring monger for Exeter scoring
twice in the second half with passes from.Ruban Chelladurai and
Chuck Chelladurai.
Jon Scheidel scored one earlier when he ball -handled his way into
the 30 yard range and blasted one through the goal keeper.
The Centennials won an important game last week beating Nairn
4-2.
Szabo exploded with two quick goals early in the first half after be-
ing set up with passes from Chelladurai and Joe Martens. However,
Nairn answered back with two goals of their own to tie the game at
two.
Rudy Veldhuizen picked up the pace late in the second half keep-
ing the hall under Centennial's control. Challaduria secured the win
with two goals, one on a penalty shot.
The Centennial's record now climbs to 6-3-1 with their next home -
game scheduled for July 16 against Dorchester.

Exeter Mites

league
EXETER - The Exeter Mite Girls
Softball team completed asuccess-
ful series of games over the last
mdnth.
Two convincing wins over Hen-
sall on June 5 and June 14 resulted
from strong Exeter hitting.
Home runs were scored by Jessica
Bray, Brittany Foster and Jennifer
Baker, combined with consistent
and solid defense from the entire
team, gave Exeter their first win.
Two home runs by Baker, triples by
Baker, Karla Pinder and Miranda
Grenier and doubles by Nicole
Evans and Karly Pinder moved
enough runners for the winning
score in the second game.
Hibbert edged Exeter by four runs
on June 16 despite a solid game per-
formance.
Exeter came back with wins over
Fullarton in a close 16-15 game.
Two of Exeter's losses were record-
ed in the first week of July and both
were very tight games. The first
game went to Crediton in 21-20
game and the second to Mitchell
with a score of 25-23.
