cer game on Sunday.
Exeter Thunder lose to Malton
Jason McFalls
EXETER - The Exeter Thunder
were at home Sunday to take on
Malton in Ontario Cup action. Hav-
ing already won their first Cup
game against Curinga, the Thunder
were looking to advance to the next
round but they ran into a very tal-
ented team from the Toronto area
losing 6-0.
Malton notched two quick goals
before the 15 -minute mark putting
Exeter at an early disadvantage.
The Thunder players battled
throughout the game but were lim-
ited in their attempts to create scor-
ing chances. The visitors moved the
ball around the field looking for
openings and keeping the Thunder
defense moving.
The fourth goal was an example
of the high skill level the Malton
team possessed. A crisp pass sent
the Malton player behind the Exet-
er defense where he finished the
play by drilling a shot under the
crossbar from a very difficult angle.
"We got beat by a better team,"
said Thunder coach John Rasen-
herg. "Malton have four players
that play for the under -19 Ontario
team. They pick their players from
a much larger area than we do."
Thunder goalie Jason Murray did
his hest to keep the score close by
making a handful of excellent save
son well-placed shots by the Mal -
ton strikers. Exeter's best scoring

chance came in the second half on
a beautiful cross by Dave Farquhar
that Bill Kline headed towards the
net.
With the Thunder out of the Cup
play they will return their attention
to league play where they are unde-
feated with a tie and a win. The
Thunder have only made two
changes to last year's team which
leads to higher expectations for this
year's squad. "We are a better team
this year because the guys are a
year older and are more experi-
enced," said Rasenherg.
The Thunder play on the road
twice this week taking on London
Marconi on Wednesday. July 12.
