Country Wife a bawdy comedy
Theatre of the 17th century a cynical satire of society
Heather Mir T -A staff
STRATFORD - If you think the
Stratford Festival is strictly high-
brow Shakespearean theatre, you're
in for a decided surprise.
The Country Wife, by William
'Wycherley, is a bawdy comedy - a
welcome change in our in-
creasingly politically correct so-
ciety. This is to restoration play
produced in keeping with the
1670's theatre -going crowd that en-
joyed nothing better than seeing it-
self mocked. But don't expect sub-
tlety in the humor. Country Wife is
the Naked Gln of the 17th century.
The plot centers around the antics
of Mr. Horner, played by Tom
McCamus, who spreads a rumour
among London socialites that he
has been castrated, while in France,
to cure a venereal disease. This al-
leged condition allows Horner free
access to all his friends' wives. He
takes enormous pleasure in se-
ducing women right under the nos-
es of thcir husbands.
"I deceive you, it seems, and oth-
ers too; for the grave matrons, and
old, rigid husbands think me as un-
fit for love as they are; but their
wives, sisters, and daughters know,
some of 'em; better things already,"
said Horner. ( Act IV, Scene III)
Things get a bit dicey for Horner
when one husband, who has not
been made aware of his supposed
misfortune, becomes jealous of
Horner's advances to his naive
country wife. Mr. Pinchwife,
played by Scott Wentworth, forces
his wife Margery to write a letter
condemning Horner's seduction.
Instead of sending the letter her
"No, mistresses are
like books. If you
pore upon them too
much, they doze
you, ...but if used
discreetly, you are
th'e fitter for con-
versation by 'em."
husband dictated, Mrs. Pinchwife
substitutes a love letter.
The performance by Marion Day
of Margery Pinchwife is one of the
highlights of the comedy. Her tim-
ing and innocent double entendres
make the scene. By playing off her
husband's frustration, Mrs. Pinch-
wifg provides some of the play's .
most hilarious moments.
"Lord, what d'ye make a fool of
me for? Don't I know that letters
are never writ but from the country
to London and from London into
the country? Now he's in town, and
I am in town too; therefore I can't
write to him you know, " said Mrs.
Pinchwife. (Act IV, Scene II)
One can't describe this play with-
out commenting on the elaborate
costuming by Ann Curtis and set
design by 'John C. Leberg. The
dress of Mr. Sparkish, played by
Stephen Ouimette, is especially en-
tertaining for all its lavender and
lace. Sparkish is the consummate
fool, and his attire serves to ac-
centuate his nature.
