Optimists present award
Lloyd Fletcher is thanked for community service
KIRKTON -Kirkton-Woodham
Optimist Club presented their
10th annual Community Service
Award to Lloyd Fletcher on June
20 at the Kirkton-Woodhalm com-
munity centre in Kirkton.
More than 135 friends, rela-
tives and Optimist members
were in attendance to recognize
the contributions that Lloyd
Fletcher has made to the com-
munity.
Fletcher as been a very active
member of the Kirkton Optimist
club right from the beginning as
a charter member in 1979. He
has held various positions
within the Club such as club
president, treasurer, and lieuten-
ant governor. In his year as
president, the club gained hon-
our club status, and for the first
time, the Kirkton-Woodham
Optimist club received other
awards. ,
Fletcher's efforts in the com-
munity were recognized by several
of his good neighbours, such as
Norris Atthill, Leon Paul, John
Ulch, Gord Robinson and Rev. Bill
Jones. The tributes included sev-
eral humorous tales.
Since the age of 17, Lloyd has
worked for McLean -Taylor (and
its predecessor McLean -Foster).
His co-workers recalled that his
advice, attitude and personality
have all been very positive.
These aspects have undoubtedly
spilled over into Fletcher's com-
munity work as he has been a mem-
ber of Kirkton United Church and
worked at various church commit-
tees and functions such as church
elder, skating rink, and church bar-
becue, to name just a few.
Fletcher still finds time to be
involved on the Kirkton-
Woodham community centre
board. The Centre, which operates
and is managed by the board, has
relied on community -minded peo-
ple such as Fletcher for its sur-
vival.
The Fletcher family has been
very supportive to Lloyd, with
help from his wife Vera, his
three daughters Shelley, Sandra
and Sonya along with son -in-
laws and son Michael. Fletcher
also has two very tiny grand-
sons, one two months old and
one just six days olds.
On behalf of the Fletcher fam-
ily, Lloyd's eldest daughter
Shelley spoke very sincerely
about their father and the kind
of morals and attitude that
he showed them.
The Kirkton-Woodham com-
munity is very fortunate to have
someone like Lloyd Fletcher
willing to become involved in
community works.
Congratulations, Lloyd
Fletcher and keep up the good
work.

When you are buying sunglasses for eye protection
this summer, be sure to choose ones that block
both UVA and UVB rays. Make sure they fit well, too.
if the sun shines in around the frames, you are los-
ing eye protection.
We hear a lot about "SPF" on labels for sunscreens. It stands for Sun
Protection Factor. A sunscreen with an SPF of 15 means you can stay in
the sun for 15 times as long before buming occurs. So if you normally
start to bum in 30 minutes, you are protected for about seven hours by
using the sunscreen.
We are required to use safety vials for prescriptions where possible.
This takes various forms but are often the "palm and tum" variety. If
you have difficulty opening these safety vials, please ask for the ones
that are easier to open. We'll flag your prescription profile accordingly.
Keep ALL medication out of reach of children.
Tobacco addiction is very powerful. A recent study of smokers who had
a heart attack found that only 1/3 of them stopped smoking after their
attack. Only half of smokers who had coronary bypass surgery kicked
the habit. So if you don't smoke, don't start!
