(•!(lvvi/ie(ls fail 235-13.3/ A bike path and a safer harbour for Grand Bend GRAND BEND - Village coun- cillors are supporting the idea of having a bicycle path connect Pin- ery Park to the south end of Grand Bend. Ian Young from the Grand Bend Rotary Club presented a proposal last Monday to construct an asphalt path over six feet wide from Pine- dale Road to the park, a distance of 7.1 km. The path, which could double as a nature trail, would be complete9 in three phases at an estimated cost of $217, 500. The Rotary club is seeking fi- nancial assistance from the village of Grand Bend as well as the Min- istry of the Environment, Ministy of Transportation, Lambton County, Stephen Township ad Bosanquet. The club is also look- ing at other ways to reduce costs for the project such as using re- cycled materials for the path's con- struction. Young said that construction nay start by the end of the year and if costs arc met the path could be completed by this time next year. Other than bicycle paths council is also looking at ways to improve the harbour front. The Grand Bend Harbour Advisory Committee made a number or recommenda- tions to make the harbour safer for boaters. One was to place a red light on the south Pier to help boaters enter the harbour at night. The Coast Guard was consulted and ;hey rec- ommended a Tight that would best be suited. The Harbour committee also rec- ommended that harbour staff paint the corners of the pier a bright col- or to make them more visible. Along with the efforts to make the pier more visible the committee would also like to sec boaters slow down. They suggested that an eight kilometer speed limit be es- tablished throughout the whole riv- er; however, the process would have to be channelled through the Provincial government who arc re- sponible for evaluating the pro- posal. In Ontario the Ministry of Natural Resources arc the designat- ed authority and a proposal must be submitted before September. For more Information please phone Deb Lord at 4
