Centennials
defeat Maltese
and Clearwater
EXETER - The Exeter Centennials soccer team won their second
consecutive game with a 6-1 victory over_the Maltese on Sunday.
Exeter dominated the game from the start with George McEwan
getting their first goal at the seven minute mark after taking a nice
pass from Jon Scheidel. Anders Willner made a difficult volley over
the charging Maltese goalkeeper to close the opening half of the
game with Exeter up by two.
Newly acquired player, Nick Szabo put on a one man show in the
second half of the game converting Exeter's next four goals.
The Centennials had to finish the game with only ten players after
Joe Dariano was injured late in the game. Exeter goalie Craig Win -
bow was also injured after team mate John Flanagan ran in to him
during a scramble in front of the net.
Exeter didn't have such an easy time defeating Sarnia Clearwater
last week. As usual the Centennials got on the scoreboard first after
Willner fed a pass to McEwan who netted the goal on a breakaway
four minutes into the game. Clearwater tied the game midway
through the second half on a penalty kick when John Flanagan took
out a breaking Sarnia player.
Exeter took the game in overtime when Chuck Walker assisted
Rudy Veldhuizen for the winning goal. The 2-1 overtime win
against Samia was a Division 2 Cup Game and brings the Centenni-
al's record to 4-3-1.
Centennial player George McEwan credited his team's victory to
better communication on the field.
"We seem to be thinking along the same lines,' 'Said McEwan. He
also said that many of the players who were off for injuries are re-
turning to their game allowing everybody to play their preferred po-
sitions. "Some players don't respond well when you shuffle them
around," said McEwan who filled in as a temporary goalie during
the Maltese game after keeper Craig Winbow sustained a broken
nose.
The Centennials will be put to the test this Sunday when they meet
first place St. Columban in regular league action.

With a chance to win the gold
medal and move on to the Canadian

summer the Exeter team played
well beating TilburyI)efore losing
to Nepean and Thamesford in
round-robin action. As a result the
team did not advance for play on
Sunday.
Imperlals split two games
EXETER - A bases loaded sin-
gle in the bottom of the seventh
inning by catcher Chris Kennedy
drove in two runs as the Exeter
Iniperials defeated Hickson 10 to
9 last Thursday night in Ontario
Junior Men's Fastball League
play.
Exeter entered the seventh
trailing 9 to 6 when, with one
out, Glenn Hines walked, Sean
McCann reached on an error, Ja-
mie Ramer added an infield sin-
gle and the seventh run was
scored on another error on Greg
Dalrymple's hard grounder.
Steve Farquhar drove in the
eighth run with an infield single,
setting the scene for Kennedy's
game winning hit. Also leading
the Imperials offensively was
third baseman Ben Armstrong,
who walked three times and
scored a run.
Jeremy Mason was the starting
pitcher and worked 3 and 1/3 in-
nings, giving up six runs on three
hits. Mason walked five and
struck out five. Steve Cook
picked up the win in relief as he
worked 3 and 213 innings, giving
up three runs on two hits while
walking five and striking out
seven.
On Sunday night in Mitchell,

er had only five base runners who
all reached their bases on balls.
Pitcher Darrell Ford started for Ex-
eter and worked 3 and 1/3 innings,
giving up eight runs on six hits,
while walking two and striking out
three. Cook worked 2 and 2/3 in-

Exeter pigeons win
Al DeHaan
EXETER - The combination of
warm weather and a tailwind again
resulted in fast pigeon races with
excellent returns.
On Saturday, June 10, 132 mem-
bers of the Lucan Homing Pigeon
Club shipped 123 pigeons to Co-
bourg and 11 of them sent 107
birds to Belleville. Tie special pi-
geon trailer, whose la t pickup oc-
curs at the Guelph Racing Pigeon
Club, arrived at Belleville at ap-
proximately 5 a.m. and pigeons
from six different clubs were re-
leased one hour later. Doubling
back to Cobourg, the driver freed
the remaining birds at 7a.m.
Exactly four hours after having
been released at Belleville, one of
Mitch Szczech's birds were back in
its home, loft. This pigeon turned
out to be the winner with a speed of
1428.87 meters per minute.
Szczech also took positions nine
and 10. The royal Hardy Lofts, also
fromLucan, were close behind,
their first pigeon flew at a speed of
1427.71 meters per min. to take
second place.
Exeter flyer Al de Haan had three
pigeons come at almost the same
time to take position three, five and
six. Jack Pierson found himself in a
more familiar spot on the sheet,
right up there in the no. 4 spot. Har-
'.ry Winters' pep -talk to his pigeons
must have helped as one of them
captured position seven. George
Gibbs had pigeon that flew well
enough to place 12th.
The Cobourg rat: was flown at
an even faster rate. Al de Haan
clocked his first pigeon three hours
and nine minutes after it was re-
leased at Cobourg, a distance of
276.549 kms from the de Haan'
lofts. The resultant velocity of 1458
meters per min. was good for first
place.

Karate tournament winners
South Huron Martial Arts School brought some winners
home from the Lucan Karate Toumament recently. Front
left, Katie Chiasson, (3rd In team kata) Ann McPherson,
(grand champion under 13, 1st In kata and weapons
kata,2nd in sparring), and Drew Atthill, (5th In kata and
2nd in team sparring) pose with sensle Brian Decker and
Jane McPherson. Missing Is Rachel McPherson.
4
Incidentally, the de Haan pigeons
must find Cobourg a good place to
leave. They certainly don't spend a
lot of time flying around Cobourg's
beautiful City Hall; so far de Haan
pigeons have won all three Co-
bourg races.

NOTICE TO PUBLIC UTILITIES
WATER CONSUMERS
To conserve water the Exeter Public Utilities will limit the use of hoses
for the watering of lawns and gardens. This requirement includes new
lawns and sod.
Effective Immediately and until further notice, the following schedule
for the use of hoses will be permitted.
Please note revised hours:
Residential Customers (households)
Sunday to Saturday inclusive
7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Commercial Customers (businesses)
Monday, Wednesday and Friday
9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Some customers are watering lawns and gardens at the rear of their
house during the restricted hours. Customers disregarding the restric-
tion periods will be given one reminder of the restriction and iif there is
a reoccurrence the customer risks a fine, or having their pressure re-
duced, that would eliminate watering with a hose for the balance of
the summer.
The commission does not wish to curtail any customers watering, but
In fairness to all customers that adhere to the restriction it must en-
force this policy.
The co-operation of all customers will be appreciated.
