Dog groomer cutting out
a business for herself

HENSALL - When the man-
ufacturing company Peggy Heipel
was employed by picked up and
left Huron Park, she found herself
out of a job. So Heipel decided to
work for herself, and now her busi-
ness has gone to the dogs.
Heipel started Pet Lovers'
Grooming over a year ago when the
company she worked for, Poulan-
Weeder the manufacturer of chain -
saws and weedeaters, closed their
doors and left Huron Industrial
Park.
After the plant closed Heipel en-
rolled in a workshop designed to
help people find the field of work
they would be most interested in.
"Everything pointed to animals
so that's how I narrowed it down to
grooming," said Heipel who had
some previous experience groom-
ing three dogs of her own.
Working out of her home in a
specially designed room, Heipel
sees an average 12 to 15 dogs come
through her canine salon. Most of
her clients are Schnauzers (mid-
sized terriers), but occasionally
Heipel grooms rare breeds such as
Soft -Coated Wheaten Terriers or
Silky Terriers. She also grooms the
odd cat.
A trip to Pet Lover's Grooming
consists of nail clipping, bathing,
shaving or hand scissoring the fur
to breed standard, ear plucking, a
bath and a fluff dry. The whole pro-
cess takes a two hours and the dogs
are fitted with a bandana and re-
warded with a treat before they
leave.
"You don't want to frighten them,
especially when they're first intro-
duced to a groomer. I want to make
their first time enjoyable," said Hei-
pel adding that puppies as young as
four months can he brought in for
their first groom.
Heipel makes it a point to be as
accessible as she can to her custom-
ers scheduling weekend appoint-
ments and even making house calls.
She said the In -hone Grooming
service she offers is really popular
among pet owners because "they
don't have to leave home" and they
are there to comfort the dogs.
"People at home find it fas-
cinating to sit and watch the pro-
cess," Heipel said.
Heipel admits though, there are
. some challenges in this business.
"You have to have a lot of pa-
tience," said Heipel explaining that
some dogs with heavy matted fur
require a lot more time and it can
be uncomfortable for the dog.
Occasionally she gets a heavy
dog that can't or won't stand on its
Peggy Heipel of Pet Lovers' Grooming gives Barney a
shave to help him keep cool this summer.

own, like the St Bernard that took
two men and herself to get into the
bathing tub.
Heipel has never been bitten and
she isn't even worried about that at
all.
"You don't want to show a dog
fear, they can sense that," she said.
According to Heipel, dogs should
be groomed periodically in order to
maintain a healthy skin and coat,
and also to control shedding and
help keep them cool in the heat of
the summer.
She encourages owners to brush
their pets regularly since it prevents
matting and provides some "quality
time" between the two.
"Dogs are a social animal and
they need to be with people," she
said.
Heipel finds it rewarding to see
the look on the owner's face when
they return to her shop to pickup
their pet.
"I like it when the owners come
back and they're really happy with
my work," she said.
However, for Heipel being self-
employed doing something she
loves to do is the most rewarding
experience for her.
"I absolutely love it!" said Hei-
pel. "I'm going to be doing this for
a long time."

GRAND BEND - Jay and Laurie Roszell of Bayfield, Ontario an-
nounced on Thursday they have purchased Warner Marine of Grand
Bend from the founders Peter and Esther Warner. The company will

cellent foundation laid by Peter and Esther Warner. Our goal is to sat-
