The bond between father and son
Fishing has been a timeless way for fathers and sons to develop their relationship
By Heather Mir T -A staff
EXETER - Fishing is a pastime
which has brought fathers and sons
together for as long as man has been
around to catch the aquatic crea-
tures. It has remained over time
one of the best ways for a strong
bond to develop naturally between
parent and child. This is passed on
through the generations as sons be-
come fathers and want their chil-
dren to have the same memories of
quiet time spent in the company of
dear old dad.
Early Saturday morning the de-
Langes agreed to meet at Morrison
Dam to demonstrate their skill at fly
fishing. Although a river might
have been more conducive to catch-
' ing something, the conservation
area outside of Exeter was peaceful
and served our purposes.
Gerry deLange of Dashwood and
his nine-year-old son have been
fishing together since Wes was two
years old. The duo try to get out
every weekend • during the season
and especially enjoy autumn fishing
on the Maitland river. Fall fishing
is much more civilized than other
---
seasons. The best time to fly fish is
around 10 a.m. so getting out of
bed at five or six in the morning is
not necessary. Warm, dry weather
in September and October is per-
fect for keeping the interest of a
young angler. Miserable condi-
tions could turn them off of fishing
forever.
Wes has recently gained an inter-
est in fly fishing due to the in-
fluence of his brother-in-law who
lives near Cambridge, an area
known for good fly fishing. Since
then, his father has re -kindled his
own interest in the finesse of fly
casting. Learning to fly cast has
been a matter of.practice and Wes
seems to have caught on quickly.
He even wrote a speech for school
about his experience with learning
to fly fish.
"It's not difficult when you get
used to it," said Wes.
Both of the deLanges are very
quiet when fishing, with dad occa-
sionally suggesting a different fly
or place to cast. Wes said the thing
he enjoys most about fishing with
his dad is getting outside, free from
the confines of school. Falling in
the river is the least enjoyable part
of fishing for him. Wes prefers
wading the rivers rather than boat-
ing on bigger water because he
tends to get sea sick.
Wes and his father are often
alone when they go out in the early,
morning. His older brother doesn't
like fishing as much as his younger
sibling.
"He hasn't got the patience for
it,"said deLange.
Cal does however join the rest of
the "boys" on an annual Thanks-
giving weekend fishing trip now
that both of the younger deLanges
are old enough to go along. Eating
the catch is also part of the enjoy-
ment of trips like this, and Wes is
eager to trade his Doritos and root -
beer for a taste of fresh trout.
Fishing is certainly not the only
way for dad to get closer to his chil-
dren. De Lange also finds time to
coach Wes' baseball team and even
if the interest in fishing wanes, the
two will always be close.
