GRAND BEND - In early April
Craig Paulger presented a pro-
posal to village councillors on en-
hancing the streetscape of Grand
Bend.
Two months later, Paulger's
proposal is a reality.
Paulger, a resident of Grand
Bend and an employee of JD's
Summerhouse spearheaded the ef-
forts of some private property
owners to plant decorative trees
and ornamental style park bench-
es along Queen Street.
When village councillors ap-
proved of the idea eight weeks
ago they offered to provide the
electricity to power the small
tights that will adorn the tree's
branches.

Quality assurance will help Big '0' compete in inter-

The employees of the division
were treated to a catered lunch out-
doors and presented with sweaters
acknowledging their efforts in the
project.
"You people are ahead of the rest
of the company for achieving this

Manager, Ron

The ISO 9002 program is an in-
ternationally recognized standard
for .quality assurance which will
help the division compete in inter-
national markets.
By February of 1995, the division
was registered by the Quality Man-
agement Institute (QMI) TO ISO
9002 quality standard. This is only
the first phase in a plan for continu-
ous improvement which will pro-
vide the company with op-
portunities outside of Canada.
The decision to pursue the quality
designation was based on several
factors. The division wanted more
formal policies and
procedures to im-
prove its efficiency.
This resulted in less
decision making at
the management lev-
el and more empow-
erment of the em-
ployees. It also has
enhanced the mar-
keting and sales ef-
fort, especially into the European
market via the United Kingdom op-
eration, as many customers re-
quested the ISO quality system
from suppliers.
Through the assistance of the In-
dustrial Adjustment Service (IAS),
"You people are
ahead of the rest
of the company
for achieving
this in such a

a division of Huron Resources De-
velopment Canada, a committee
was established in September 1993
to achieve ISO 9002.
Chanyi was chairperson and
championed the project through the
division. The committee was made
up of one member from IAS, an ex-
ternal chairperson, and outside con-
sultant and several employees and
managers from Big '0' Inc. The
committee met once a month to
monitor the results of the sub-
committees and to determine the
action plan to meet the division's
objectives.
The designation will have a tre-
mendous impact on the division.
The employees have been given
greater involvement in the or-
ganization, resulting in improved
efficiency, as well improving the
quality of products, procedures and
service.
This division has been growing at
a ye. rly rate of 70 per cent, re-
sulting in a 27 per cent increase in
the number of division employees.
The division has also realized over
$75,000 of potential cost savings
through the ISO program.

four park benches were recently in-
stalled along the Boulevard. Paulg-
er said the trees along with the
benches "seems to create a natural
corridor" that is popular among the
people who walk down the street.
"It looks good and it provides peo-
ple with a place to
sit," he said.
"There's a lot of
things people can be
doing to enhance
the appearance of
Grand Bend," said
Paulger. "We've
been long concerned
about the cosmetic
appearance of the
village and drawing
more tourism to the area."
The benches are made of white
ash wood with black cast iron ends
and according to Paulger they
should be able to withstand the ele-
ments as well as the vandalism
some property falls victim to dur-
ing the summer.
"We're pretty confident it can
withstand some of the things Grand
Bend sees during some weekends,"
Paulger said.
The benches are
bolted down to the
sidewalk and face
towards the store-
fronts. The pro-
prietors of the
Health Nut, a health
product store, An 'n'
Soul, a picture and
framing store, Beer -
wear and Lea Nel-
son clothing stores, have enjoyed
an increase in traffic along their
street since the project was com-
pleted.
"We've been
long concerned
about the
cosmetic
appearance of
the village..."
The new look has encouraged
one business located on the north
end of the street to expand their
facilities, Beauty and the Beach,
a hair and aesthetics salon have
rented the two remaining units on
the street encroaching closer to
the decorated property.
"This is the kind of thing we're
after," explains Paulger. "We
hope other businesses will follow
suit and do the same to their
properties," he said.
So far, Paulger said the com-
munity has responded well to the
idea and people were using the
benches as soon as they were up.
"It' not uncommon to see the
husbands sitting on the bench
waiting for their wives shopping
in the stores," he said.
