"There's a great sort of charisma to an air show," said Lawson. "Peo- ple are so fascinated with flight." This is the third time the show will be hosted in four years. In 1992, Lawson was told that the Ca- nadian Snowbirds would be inter- ested in performing. A dream come true for Lawson, he jumped at the chance to have the famous team perform in this area. "They are true Canadian am- bassadors (the Snowbirds)," said Lawson. This is the 25th an- niversary for the team. The Snowbirds will perform from 6:00 to 6:30pm. They must be down three hours prior to sunset due to the position of the sun. With their 25 years of experience, they put a lot of thought into how their formations will appear to their au- dience. They don't want the crowd to be forced to stare into the sun to watch them perform. This year's show in Huron Air Park has some new attractions from year's past. The day will be split into two sections. The morning will be mostly an education format, with hundreds of school kids being bussed in from all over the county. "The morning section is for ed- ucation," said Lawson. "It com- bines engineering, science and technology, where they can act .al- ly meet and greet the participants." Major Deanna Brasseur, one of the first two CF -18 pilots, will be on hand to talk to the students. They will also be treated to a par- achute demonstration. A para- chutist will pack his parachute in - front of the kids, and explain what he is doing. He will then go up in a plane for his jump. When the parachutist is coming down from the plane, he will be able to speak into a radio, which will be broadcast over a P.A. sys- tem for the kids to hear. The P.A. system will also be used for Terry Stewart? when he per- forms his aerobic demonstration in an airplane. The afternoon performances will focus on flight maneuvers of teams such as the Snowbirds. 'Other planes will include a T-33 from Greenwood, Nova Scotia, a tactical demonstration team of the Hornets from Baguetteville, Quebec, two F- 16s, a KC -135, and an F-14 Tom Cat from San Diego, which was the same plane Tom Cruise flew in the movie Top Gun. "We have a team coming called Northern Lights: This is their first performance in Ontario. Three out of the four pilots are ex - snowbirds," said Lawson. Another feature at this year's show is a fully functional field hos- pital from Selfridge, Detroit with 18 personnel. Safety is a big factor in a show of this size, said Lawson. "We plan for the worst and hope it doesn't happen." An air space of 10 nautical miles f1 will be sterilized around the show, which will clear the space of all other aircrafts. The crowds will be kept a safe distance from the ac- tion, and there will be no planes flying over the crowd. "We have a military and a ci- vilian advisor. We try to be super- sensitive to safety," said Lawson. Over 200 people will have helped 4' .1 ' organize the event when it is cot - pleted. The different planes will be *- riving on June 7, and the public is welcome to come and watch land. All of the participants will staying at Centralia College exc for the Snowbirds, who will staying in Grand Bend at Oakw The gates will open at 10:00ain on Thursday, and the aerial shot will begin at 4:00pm. Up to 7,0( ) advertising cards for the show have been handed out, and organizers ate praying for good weather. "Our market appears to be people who have not been to air shows be- fore," said Lawson. "Which makes it fun and exciting for us too." HMP - Your Full Line GM Dealcar welcomes everyone to Il ic 1995 Aerial Show in Hui i c I l l I'c i rl.
