Magnets offer
alternative for
discomfort
EXETER - Sometimes it is worth
it to just try it, even if you don't
know how it works.
Judy Dougall in Exeter and Mar-
lene Zwaan in Hensall are distribu-
tors ofalternative health products
produced by Nikken. The products
use magnets to relieve discomfort
and aches caused by everyday life.
"It's an experiential product,"
says Dougall, who believes you
have to try the product before you
form any opinions. She says mag-
nets have worked for her. Everyday
she puts two coin size magnets on
her wrists to relieve the pain she
e tperie es from her repetitive
t,: to farm. The :nagnets are
held there by a wristband.
"The ache went away after I used
the magnets," says Dougall.
Zwaan had been experiencing
pain in her knees and back for a
long time. It was next to impossible
to sit for long periods without feel-
ing excruciating pain. She discov-
ered Nikken products at a local
home and garden show, and found
that she could move and sit more
freely after using the magnets.
"If you have a sore or an ache or
a discomfort on any part of your
body, we would put a magnet on
that part. We find that we get rid of
our discomforts after using it for a
year in time," says Ray Rock, an-
other distributor of Nikken.
"How the magnet works, we do
not know."
Distributors such as Dougall and
Zwaan face skepticism about their
product on different levels. They
say that sometimes it is difficult to
approach their friends and neigh-
bours with the product, because all
they get are "blank stares," says
Zwaan. "They think you are a trav-
elling salesman."
The government is also very
skeptical of alternative health prod-
ucts. There are very strict guide-
lines for what people like Dougall
and Zwaan may claim with regards
to magnets. They may not say any-
thing that refers to "healing, thera-
py, cures, or therapeutic".

EXETER - The ladies from the
Womens Ministries, assembled for
a luncheon at Millington's in
Brucefield, May 25.
The Pentecostal ladies met at the
home of president Jean Triebner
following the luncheon. The hymn
"Hold the Fort" was sung. Mrs.
Ruth McLaren prayed over the ser-
vice.
The roll call was taken by Mrs.
Shirley Prouty, and answered by a
Bible verse on "Mother". There
were 13 present.
It was decided in our business to
send a donation to the India's
Boy's School. Mrs. Dorothy Coop-
er read a letter about the India's

Ten clincis for seniors
operating in Middlesex
STRATHROY - A demonstra-
tion by the leaders of HOMME's
(Helping Others Maintain Mid-
dlesex Elders) Wellness Clinics
was presented at the annual meet-
ing Tuesday in Strathroy.
Christine Poier, Arva, put the ten
other leaders through the simple
routines designed to show the im-
provement possible if seniors take
advantage of the 10 clinics now
operating in Middlesex.
Jackie Wells, manager VON
volunteer programs for Middlesex,
described the rapid expansion ex-
perienced by HOMME during the
past fiscal year. She said the man-
date was expanded to include dis-
abled adults; satellite offices were
established in Parkhill and Wards-
ville; and the group has been asked
to assist with the expansion of the
Wellness program into Lambton
County.
Another success was obtaining
the funding to expand the Meals
on Wheels program into McGilliv-
ray, East Williams, West Wil-
liams, Adelaide and Metcalfe. In
addition, there will he more train-
ing for the expanding Friendly
Visiting program.

Mrs. Wells says she sees the cur-
rent year as one in which the or-
ganization will solidify its gains,
and evaluate how HOMME is do-
ing both from the point of view of
seniors and the volunteers. For ad-
ministration purposes, Middlesex
is divided into three regions, each
with its own co-ordinator Ross
Daily, CFPL on -air personality,
pointed out that only one in four
Canadians are volunteers. He pre-
dicted all Canadians will have to
become volunteers if social servic-
es are to be maintained despite
government cut backs.
"You don't hear any of the poli-
ticians saying that," Daily said.
The speaker was introduced by
Grace Patrick of the Advisory
Board and thanked by Bernie Ny-
man, acting co-ordinator of the
Southwest Region. Sandra Pear-
son, vice -chairperson of the Advi-
sory Committee and head of the
Northwest Regional Committee,
acted as chairperson of the pro-
gram.
