Karate for fitness and
for family time together
Lucan karate school hosts family oriented tournament
Chris Skalkos T -A staff
LUCAN - Karate has tradi-
tionally been taught for self defense
and physical fitness but Dan Bell,
head instructor of Lucan Karate
School, is giving his class a differ-
ent kick. Bell's school promotes
Karate as a family oriented activity.
"We want to promote family in-'
volvement. I think it's fabulous that
parents take the time for get in-
volved with their kids in a sport
like karate," says Bell.
Karate is a Martial art spawned
centuries ago from the far East. It
combines fighting techniques with
self-discipline and endorses a great
deal of respect for oneself and for
others.
Karate is a hard and fast form of
self defense that incorporates the
use of both hands and feet evenly
and differs from Kung Fu which is
a softer and more flowing form, or
from Tae Kwon Do which em-
phasizes kicking.
However, Bell says that all mar-
tial arts are based on the same prin-
ciples of body mechanics, balance,
stance and self-discipline.
The pupils of Lucan Karate
School are taught by some high cal-
ibre instructors. Bell, a seasoned
black belt is assisted by Leo
Loucks, 1986-88 world champion
kickboxer and Sid Chambers one-
time 1979 Canadian Karate Cham-
pion.
Together they instruct 55 stu-
dents on the art of karate. Most of
Bell's students are between the ages
of 7 and 16 with five different fam-
ilies participating in his class.
The first lesson Bell delivers to
his pupils is the most important:
"There's no screwing around,
everything is done properly and re-
spectfully." Bell says it's important
to instill the right attitude among
his pupils right away because some
people adopt the wrong attitude
when learning self-defense.
"Karate teaches you not to fight,"
says Bell. "We're not going to have
any students with attitudes. If any-
one is caught fighting out of the
club they're kicked out."
"It's a good
opportunity to
stay fit and
spend quality
family time to-
gether"
This Sunday many of Bell's pu-
pils will get a chance to test what
the have learned at the Lucan Ka-
rate School 1st Annual Tournament
at the Lucan Rec Centre.
The tournament pits karate stu-
dents of the same belt classifica-
tion, one on one, in a non -contact
point system sparring match.
Bell says its a chance for his stu-
dents to apply what they have
learned and will also expose them
to the different styles of other mar-
tial artists from the 18 different Ka-
rate school participating.
Most importantly, Bell says the
tournament is designed to provide a
day out for the kids for some fun
and allow them to feel the excite-
ment of a live tournament without
having to drive to Toronto where
most of the other tournaments are
held.
Bonnie Laprise, a resident of Lu -
can has enrolled her whole family
in Bell's -karate school and says it's
a good way to keep fit while spend-
ing time with her family.
"We were driving back and forth
from the school dropping the kids
off and picking them up so we de-
cided to join," says Laprisewho
takes Karate alongside her husband
Leo and three children. "1 don't see
the point of just dropping the kids
off when I could be enjoying it my-
self," she adds.
Laprise admits she was a little '
leery of sparring at first. Sparring
the term used to describe two stu-
dents fighting one another but pull-
ing their punches at the last second
so as not to hurt one another.
"Now I love it," Laprise says.
"The more conditioned you become
you lose your fear and develop a
love and understanding for it," she
says.
"I think parents should be joining
their kids here, Laprise adds. We as
a family have always done things
together and karate is a good op-
portunity to stay fit and spend qual-
ity family time together."

there somewhere.
Local golfer gets
hole -in -one on
par three hole

EXETER - Carol Preece from Exeter got a hole in one at Iron-
wood Golf Club last Monday, but don't ask her what she did with
the golf ball.
Most proud golfers would have picked up that hole -in -one ball and
kept it as a souvenir to brag about that lucky shot forever. Others
would have even placed it in a display casc on the trophy shelf and
thrown a house party inviting friends and relatives over to gaze in
awe at that one in a million golf ball.
But Preece did neither.
Instead, Preece did the unexpected, the unimaginable, the down
right unorthodox - she kept playing with the same ball!
"I didn't know, nobody told me," said Preece about playing with
her hole -in -one ball instead of picking it up and putting it in her
pocket as a keepsake.
"1 kept playing with it and I lost it in the pond," said Preece point-
ing to the mammoth pond on the seventh hole that has gobbled up
many a golf ball over the years. "None of us have hit a hole -in -one
before, 1 didn't know what to do with it," she said.
Preece, who has only been golfing for three years, used a number
five iron to smack the ball 117 yards and into the cup on the number
4 hole.
Stu Homuth of Exeter got a hole -in -one two weeks ago on a par
four which is, to any experienced golfer, an amazing and very rare
shot.
Preece's hole -in -one took place on a par three where shots like that
are a little more common, but it still came as a surprise.
"1 couldn't believe it until 1 walked over and there and saw it for
myself," she said. Some say hole -in -ones on a par three is not that
big of a deal,'but for Preece it was undoubtedly the shot of her life
because "normally I'm never on the green."

tle help from instructor Dan Bell.
