Born and raised in Middlesex, I am a life- long resident of the County. Barb and 1 have raised our two sons, Sean and Nathan, here. I understand the issues facing Middlesex and my involvement in the community through public service and volun- teer activities has given me an op- portunity to hear your concerns as well. I have a long and varied history of community service in London and Middlesex including the offices of Reeve of Glencoe; Mid- dlesex County Councillor; Middles- ex County Warden; Chairman, Middlesex County Planning Board; Board of Governors of the Univer- sity of Western Ontario; Public Utilities Commissioner, Western Fair Board of Directors, and the Middlesex -London Board of Health. I also served as MPP for Middlesex from 1985 to 1990. Dur- ing that time, I was appointed Par- liamentary Assistant to the Minis- ter of Education, Parliamentary Assistant to the Treasurer and Chief Government Whip. Throughout this election campaign, I have had the opportunity to meet some of you and discuss the chal- lenges facing Ontario. Like you, I am concerned about the future of Bruce Smith PC candidate - Middlesex When you pick up your pen to vote on June 8th, ask yourself, "can I afford to vote for anyone other than Bruce Smith? Smith is your P.C. candidate for Middlesex and your only logical choice in this election. The past ten years have been difficult for our province. Successive Liberal and NDP governments havegouged the wallets of the average citizen. All of these items and many, many more were found at the Com- munity Yard Sale on Saturday on • the streets of Hensall. Dozens of houses took part in the annual event. All that was needed was a front yard, a sturdy table and a few things that just don't "fit" anymore. "I've sold a lot today," said one tired vendor. "So much that it is starting to look embarrassing what I have left out there." The good business could also be attributed to the bright sunny weather. Hundreds of people were out on the streets, as cars were forced to politely dodge the single- minded pedestrians. At the Noakes house, six year old Laura Noakes was in charge of the day's sales. "You've had a good day, haven't you," said Pat Noakes, her mother. Laura agreed, and displayed her full pockets. She is planning to use the money to buy a pair of inline skates. "About three or four people tried to talk me down today," said Laura. Some of the stores also got in- volved, and set up a sidewalk sale. Local service clubs such as the Op- timists were out selling food and drinks to hot and tired patrons. There was also a classic car dis- • play outside the Community Centre that drew quite a few for a break from the power -shopping, and pony rides were ready for the children. It is time for a change. Bruce Smith brings to the voters of Middlesex a combination of youth and experience. In his 33 years he has earned a diploma in Urban Design, an honours degree in Environmental Studies, with a minor in political science, and a graduate degree in Public Adminis- tration. Smith is currently a senior planner with the City of London and previous to this position, he was Assistant to the Administrator this province. I believe that some- thing must be done now to address and eliminate the provincial deficit. get Ontario working again and maintain the quality services, that we rely on. I also believe that the Liberal party offers fair and effec- tive solutions to these issues. Ontario must get its spending un- der control. Under Bob Rae's NDP government, the total provincial debt has more than doubled to $98 billion and Ontario's credit rating has been downgraded three times. A Liberal government will balance Ontario's budget within four years, cut government spending by more than $4 billion while preserving health care and education, cut taxes by 5% during the first term of gov- ernment (idcluding repealing the 5% tax on auto insurance premi- ums), and cut the red tape and cost of doing business with governmerh by 50%. • and Town Planner for the for- mer Township of Westminster in Middlesex County. Mike Harris' Common Sense Revolution has the full support of Bruce Smith. The inspired logic of the plan appeals to the people of Ontario from all walks of life. We have all been paying too much in provincial taxes for too long. We can feel relieved to know that our tax burden will be diminished un- der the Hams government. This reduction in taxes will stim- ulate • new economic ' growth through consumer spending and in- vestment. This, in turn will lead to natural job creation. We are all weary of government excesses. Bruce Smith, as part of I believe the Liberal party offers a reasonable and realistic approach to deficit management while pro- tecting and reforming health care and education, encouraging job creation, and offering strong eco- nomic support for Ontario's indus- tries including agriculture, tourism, export and cultural industries. Bob Rae and the NDP have no plan on how they would govern if re-elected. They are offering only more of the same expensive gov- ernment lacking direction. And the plan proposed by Mike Harris and the Conservatives promising 30% tax cuts is not realistic and will have significant negative impact on the standard and quality of essential services. I understand the importance of agriculture to Middlesex and will work to improve and extend the MSA program to cover all farm the Harris government, will reduce non priority spending by 20% with- in the next three years. Health care, classroom funding for educa- tion and law enforcement will not be affected by this reduction in spending and in fact will reward those facilities which can reduce waste. In addition to cutting government spending, the Harris team will reduce the size of govern- ment. The budget will be fully balanced within five years. The people of Ontario deserve this much and more. Ontario will finally be open for business once again. Common sense dictates that eliminating red tape, cutting WCB premiums by 5% for all employers, repealing the commodities, provide 85% cover- age under the GRIP, improve. crop insurance, and protect the farm property -tax rebate program. A Liberal government would also re- peal the Agriculture Labour Rela- tions Act and bring back the ex- emption for family farms under the Ontario Labour Relations Act. I agree with your concerns re- garding education reforms and re- ducing the number of school boards and believe that exploring other options to cut costs such as sharing services between schools and districts may be better alterna- tives for Middlesex. I have also heard many of you express your opinions on amalgamation of mu- nicipalities and share your con- cerns. These are tough times for Ontario and tough choices lie ahead for the next government and for residents NDP's job -killing labour legislation (Bill 40), among other logical ac- tions will send the message that Ontario is about to return to its strengths of by -gone days. Bruce Smith is poised to make these changes for the people of Middles- ex. Born and raised near Thorn - dale in Middlesex County, Bruce has the interests of the friends and neighbours he knew while growing up, foremost in his plans. Bruce is married to Heather McNeely. They share a belief in family values based on trust, com- mitment, unity and support. Bruce is making a commitment to the peo- ple of Middlesex. He will listen to your concerns, make decisions of Middlesex and London. I have a record of experience and public ser- vice of working on issues important to you. I understand your concerns and am committed to work with you to restore opportunity to our com- munity and our province. That's why 1 am running for MPP for Mid- dlesex. That's why I ask for your support on June 8. based on common sense and act re- sponsibly. Now it is your turn to act. Do the logical thing for Middlesex, elect Bruce Smith.
