DASHWOOD - A plaque was
presented to Dashwood United
Church Sunday morning to honour
one of the charter members of the
Stitch and Chatter club which was
in existence from 1928 to 1988.
The plaque was presented in
memory of Gertie (Hoffman)
McCrae who was one of the origi-
nal members of the club. She died
in 1994. Her daughter Bonnie
Hunter was in attendance, Sunday.
The Stitch and Chatter club
started in 1928 as a Sunday School
class at Dashwood's Evangelical
Church. Letta Taylor was the
teacher and founder of the club.
The purpose of the club was to
welcome newcomers to Dashwood
and the church as well as being a
social group for women. The club
did a great deal of work for the
Red Cross and got its name from
it.
During World War II from 1939
to 1945, the Stitch and Chatter
club sent many parcels overseas to

Obesity is becoming a real problem in most in-
dustrialized nations. In Canada, it's estimated
that 35% of men and 27% of women aged 18-
74 are overweight enough to be called
"obese". This problem causes many increased health risks.
Here are a few of them:
High blood pressure and increased cardiovascular risks, build-up
of blood sugar, diabetes, gallbladder disease, arthritis and other
joint problems, breathing obstruction (sleep apnea), cancer of
the breast and uterus, psychological problems like depression,
plus the usual social and quality of life problems stemming from
being too big and heavy.
The answer is to reduce but don't be discouraged. Even a mod-
est 10% drop in weight can result In health benefits. Check with
your doctor.
It's always nice to have an easy way to keep weight down. There
is a new drug being researched that is supposted to block fat ab-
sorption in the gastriontestinal tract. The drug is called Orlistat
but unfortunately Is still In the research stages.

the boys of this area. A room at the
War Memorial Hospital in London,
now known as Children's Hospital
of Western Ontario was furnished
by the club.
When the Dashwood Community
Centre was built in 1963, the club
helped furnish the kitchen and in
later years gave donations each
Christmas to a charity in Huron
county.
Every Thursday night from Sep-
tember to June, except for Christ-
mas and Holy Week, club members
took turns hosting an evening of
bridge and fellowship. Even
though the club stopped getting to-
gether on a weekly basis in 1988, it
stayed a close knit group among its
members.
As one of the members said Sun-
day morning, "Today we are hon-
ouring Gertie McCrae one of the
original members of the Sunday
School class of 1928. It is remarka-
ble that 67 years later we are in the
same church where the Stitch and
Chatter club originated."
