A new baler throw wagon and car were also lost in the fire on the Flynn property. The members of the Clinton and Arca Fire Department were busy last week, receiving four fire calls in Live days. A chick- en barn fire at the Durrer farm on May 18 was contained due to quick reaction from those who first noticed the smoke. The barn sustained minor damage. A third fire in Stanley Town- ship kept firefighters busy for three hours last Sunday. The fire was limited to a big pile of baled straw. Findley to stop at Blyth book sale BLYTH - Accomplished Ca- nadian author Timothy Findley is scheduled to stop at the Blyth Festival's annual "Biggest Book Sale in Huron County" on June 3. Chicken pox cases reported increasing SEAFORTH - A higher than usual incidence of chicken pox is being reported by schools and physicians in Huron Country, according to the Huron Exposi- tor. In the final three months of last year, 86 cases of chicken pox were reported to the health unit. Chicken pox is contagious from the early symptoms until the pocks dry up. "That's part of the problem. Children just go off to school and don't know they have chick- en pox," Director of Public Health Nursing, Diane Petrie told the Expositor. Accident results in harbour access restrictions GODERICH - An accident in Quebec has resulted in public access restrictions from federal harbours during loading and off- loading of ships. Included in this list is the Goderich harbour where the Ca- nadian Coast guard is erecting fences in front of Goderich Ele- vators' and Sifto Salt Mine's loading docks. This action comes after a person was killed when a boat's can dropped a stone crusher on a car, reported the Godcrich Signal=Star. Gates at Sifto Salt will be closed one hour before and after loading. Warning signs will be posted at the Goderich Elevator. "Just because there's one bloody accident in Quebec, the rest of Canada has to suffer," said Maurice Jenkins, a member of the Environmental and Works Committee. 1 • IN THF. NF.W.S All Candidates meeting held In GB GRAND BEND - Grand Bend heard the voice of politics when the Cha-*tber of Commerce hosted an All Candidates meeting at the Legion hall on Friday night. Candidates for the Lambton County riding: Marcel Beaubien from the Progressive Conservatives, Liberal Larry O'Neill, P{l)P Dona Stewardson and Jim Hopper from the Family Co- alition Party gathered in Grand Bend to field questions from a moderator and from the audience in an effort to sway voters before the upcoming June 8th election. The two hour meeting allowed each candidate an open- ing comment before taking turns answering pre -written questions relating to the village of Grand Bend before turning to broader provincial questions. The questions asked for the candidates' views on local issues such as improving tourism, re -assessing property taxes and educa- tion, to provincial taxes, economic problems, auto insurance and govern- ment control of the internet. One question which created a murmur among audience members asked the candidates if they felt Grand Bend is lacking in representation at Queens Park as a result of its geographical position and whether the vil- lage would be better served in the Huron County riding. "Definitely not," said NDP candidate Dona Stewardson. Although 1 have to admit when representing Lambton a lot of times I have to remind people that Bosanquet is in Lambton County not Huron." PC candidate Marcel Beaubien agreed. "It's a long dis- "If Grand Bend's ties tance to drive around this riding; however, I would hate to are with Huron see Grand Bend go to the next riding. I think you're part of the fabric of Larnbton County and we would like to keep County then maybe you there," he said. we should look at Jim Hopper from the Family Coalition Party took a that," more neutral stance saying the people of Grand Bend should decide. "If that's what the people wish than fine, if you don't want to than by all means I encourage you to stay within Lambton," said Hop- per. Liberal Larry O'Neill, however favoured a move to the Huron riding and said that he had suggested it earlier when he was chairman of the Lambton County Local Boundary Committee. "I don't ste this issue as a case of Lambton losing Grand Bend. I see it as a situation of deciding where does Grand Bend feel more comfortable and what county does it make more sense for Grand Bend to be in? If Grand Bend's ties are more to Huron County then maybe we should look at that," said O'Neill. "Maybe that's not the right thing to 'Say as a pol- itician but it's the truth," he said. On a provincial level, when asked what government services can be reduced by 50 percent or more Beaubi- en was quick to criticize the amount of government em- ployees "living off the system" in Toronto. "I don't know where you could cut services. I think you should strive to make government as efficient as possible by eliminating fraud and abuse in all our social programs," Beaubien said. Hopper said he would eliminate the Ministry of Mul- ticulturalism, limit bilingualism and phase-out rent control. "We're prepared to put a freeze on all public co-op and non-profit hous- ing developments," he said. O'Neill attacked the two provincially funded broadcasting networks CBC and TVO. "I fail to see why we need two public Television systems in this prov- ince. We've got towers stuck all over this province in French, in English and 1 have no idea how much these things cost. To me it's a total waste and I think it's time that the broadcasting service be sold or privatized. Stewardson commented that the New Democrat Party has already brought down the number of government employees without cutting services by stopping fraud and streamlining health services and education. Moderator for the evening Tom Kneale of Gaiser- Kneale Insurance felt the All Candidates meeting was successful and all four party hopefuls represented their positions on the selected issues very well. He said the meeting format allowed the candidates to put their ideas for- ward without the tensions and restrictions of a formal debate. Lambton County has traditionally elected its riding representative from the political party that forms the majority government. It was a tory stronghold for 40 years until the Liberals took over in 1985 and then it went NDP along with Bob Rae in 1990. "I would hate to see Grand Bend go to a different riding...I think it's part of the fabric of Lambton."
