By Ross Haugh from the archive the Exeter Times Adv 10 YEARS AGO May 22, 1985 - On May 15, Larry Hardy opened his office door to begin his first day as the new police chief of Exeter and he in- tends to keep that door open. The recently appointed head of the town's six -man police force has come to Exeter with certain goals. Foremost is creating and maintaining an open door policy with members of his force, elected officials and the general public. 25 YEARS AGO May 21, 1970 - A three-day camping trip sponsored by South Hu- ron District High School came to an abrupt and tragic end early Thursday when two district girls drowned in a man-made lake in the Parkhill Dam Conservation Area. They were Geraldine Moddejonge of Exeter and Janet Guenther of Shipka. A former member of the Exeter detachment of the Ontaior Provin- cial Police, Sergeant George Mitchell is in charge of the 24 man force at Grand Bend for the summer months. Coinciding with the second annual graduation exercises at Cen- tralia College of Agricultural Technology was unveiling of a plaque commemorating the opening of the new veterinary services labora- tory at Huron Park. 50 YEARS AGO May 23, 1945 - The Zurich Lions club received their charter Thursday night. J. Albert Traquair, president of the sponsoring Exet- er Lions was in charge of the celebration. Patrick J. O'Dwyer is the first Zurich president. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil' Rowe have received a letter from their son Corporal A.W. Rowe from somewhere in Belguim. He wrote, " I read in the Maple Leaf that Orval Cann's cow gave birth to her sixth set of twins. I don't know how old those twins are but it sounded good to me as this is the only home news I have had for a month." A swine club has been organized by the Exeter Agricultural Socie- ty. The executive includes Glenn Fisher, Will Ford and Jack Hey- wood and coach Bill Ellerington. An old landmark in Exeter, the sales barn at the rear of Jones and May has been torn down and will be replaced by a modern seed cleaning plant by Jones, MacNaughton and Company. 60 YEARS AGO May 23, 1960 - Mr. Harry Hoffman of Dashwood has added an- other gold medal to his collection, and is to be congratulated on win- ning the finals for baritone soloists at the Stratford Music Festival. 75 YEARS AGO May 24, 1920 - Mr. W.J. Beer is erecting a garage at the rear of his business premise on James street. Mr. Fred Kerr of Crediton, the crack shot of Huron county was in Galt last week and carried off the premier prize breaking 142 of 150 rocks. Exeter council approved a petition from residents to water Eliza- beth street from James to Huron. Also passed was a bylaw forbidding the parking of autos at any one time longer than 30 minutes on the business section of Main street. Most Exeter merchants will close their places of business each Wednesday during the months of June, July and August. At an auction sale at Grand Bend conducted by C.N. Cooper of London for George Ecclestone, 42 lots were sold with prices rang- ing from $150 to $360. 100 YEARS AGO May 25, 1895 -Harry Hutton, alias "Diamond Charlie", the al- leged St. Marys diamond swindler who is held for extradition has been again remanded on a charge of forgery at Swanshoue, Georgia. Mr. William Kestle of Sharon delights in speeding his handsome driver and all that is required now is a fair young lady to accompnay him while driving. J.D. Atkinson, furniture merchant located north of the town hall has a 10 piece bedroom outfit on sale for $20.50. The Ladies Aid of the Elimville Methodist Church is holding a "Blue Jay" tea on May 24. With a splendid program ready to go, the admission is 10 cents.
