Lucan Irish honor six
players at awards banquet
Chris Skalkos T -A staff
LUCAN - The Lucan Irish Hock-
ey club honored their outstanding
players at an Awards Banquet in
Lucan Wednesday night. The pom-
pous occasion was also used to say
goodbye to a couple of prominent
players that have contributed a
great deal to the club over the
years.
Scott Riddle and Greg DePrest
are past their eligibility age to play
junior hockey and will no longer be
playing for the Lucan Irish.
During his six years with the
Irish, DePrest has consistenly been
their top scorer. He was named the
Most Valuable Player for the regu-
lar season.
Scott Riddle, has played for the
Irish for four years. The club will
miss his fast skating and leadership
abilities.
Other award recipients were Will
Giles (Best Defensman), Mike Ja-
remchenko (Most Improved
Player), Steve Watson (MVP for
Playoffs), Steve Mathews (Team
Leadership Award) and Steve Hud-
son, a rookie.
Co -coaches Jeff Dalrymple and
Scott Bogart, along with assistant
coach Mark Bannon led the team
through a 21-18-1 season record
with a 7-7 record in the playoffs.
At 28 years of age Bogan, Dal-
rymple 25, and Bannon, 27, are by
far the youngest coaching team in
the Junior "D" league. Bogart and
Dalrymple were newly acquired by
the Irish last season after past coach
Ken Needham left to coach junior
"B".
The Irish got a slow start to the
season last year losing their first ten
games. The first couple of months
left Bogart questioning his role
with the club as he was faced with
a potentially embarrassing season.
"Starting off at 0-10, I remember
thinking 'what have I got myself
into," said Bogart while delivering
a speech at the banquet.
"But things worked out for the
better. We started to play our best
hockey at the right time," he said
recalling the incredible comeback
the Irish mounted near the end of
the season when they went on a ten
game winning streak giving them
enough points to make the playoffs.
The Irish really turned up the jets
in the playoffs beating Seaforth in
four games before losing a close se-
ries to Port Stanley, 4-3, who even-
tually went on to win the Ontario
Championship, .
"I've been involved with sports
for a long time and I have never
seen such team orientation from the
top to the bottom," said past Gener-
al Manager Pat Ryan, about the
team's late comeback. "We almost
beat the best team in [Port Stanley]
junior hockey. We had them up
against the ropes and they knew it,"
he said.
The Lucan Irish have just cel-
ebrated their 25th anniversary and
during those 25 years they have
never failed to make the playoffs
winning the Ontario Championship
in 1980 and again in 1987.
Throughout their existence the
club has also enjoyed strong sup-
port from their community.
"Money has never been a prob-
lem," said Bannon adding that loc
businesses are eager to sponsor t e
hockey club while the rest of their
expenses are met through fund-
raisers. "If you have good players
from the community, playing for
the community you get good sup-
port," he said.
Bogart and Bannon look at the
past season as a vital building block
for the future. Despite the feeble
start the players showed they have
the determination and the work eth-
ics needed to pull themselves out of
a deficit and become serious con-
tenders in the league.
With a good mix of rookies and
seasoned veterans returning Bogart
and Bannon feel they have a shot at
an Ontario Championship in the up-
coming season.
"The players deserve a lot of
credit. We've seen some promising
things here and I think we have a
good chance next year," Bogart
said.

Senior girls soccer
team makes history
EXETER - The SHDHS senior
girls soccer team made history at
South Huron as they became the
first senior girls team to win a Hu-
ron title. They defeated F.E. Madill
Mustangs 2-0 last Tuesday on goals
by Danielle Miners and Heather
Davies.
The Panthers struggled with this
team during their first two league
encounters so they knew exactly
what to do when they went up
against the faster Madill team.
They took their space away.
The Panthers played aggressively
and skillfully to deny the Madill
team the running room they needed
to mount an offense.
The win qualified them for their
first W.O.S.S.A. competition held
in St. thomas May 25 and 26.
where they will face West Elgin
and Central Lamhton.
On Thursday the Panthers trav-
elled to Stratford f'or the Huron
Perth Finals where they lost 3-0 to
St. Mikes.
Coach Jim Workni'an said the
loss won't hurt , them too much in
the W.O.S.S.A. playoff rounds but
it -provided- a wake-up call for the
` girls who may have been getting a
little too confident.
Workman' will he working hard
getting the Panthers ready for their
next two games in St. Thomas but
his work is far from over. Work-
man is already getting the ball roll-
ing for the upcoming field hockey
season with an open scrimmage on
May 30. He hopes the success his
soccer team is enjoying now will
spill over onto his field hockey
team this September.
Exeter Fury won at
home against London
EXETER - The Exeter Fury soc-
cer team hosted the Morningstar
club from London on Sunday beat-
ing them 13-1 in an embarrassing
and lopsided game.
Exeter dominated the game de-
spite not having any substitutions.
The Fury started the scoring early
as Tom Westerveld and Pete McAl-
lister scored from in close. Dan
Martens mademn excellent run and
blasted a shot in the upper part of
the net. Jason McFalls and Jeff Lin-
gard made it 5-0 at the half as they
found the mark from the top of the
box.
Morningstar capitalized on a
sloppy play by the Fury early in the
second half getting their first and
only goal of the game. The rest of
the game belonged to the Fury as
they put eight more goals on the
>oard led by McAllister's three.
One of McAllister's goals came on
a free kick as he picked the corner
on a hard drive.
Jeff Lingard added another on a
greta solo effort and Westerveld
got his second goal on a header. Al-
lan McFalls had a rare scoring op-
portunity as he deked around the
goalie and shot a slow miler toward
the empty net where Dan Martens
finished the play by tapping it in.
Mark Brintnell had a few near
misses during the game but he man-
aged to notch a goal as did Shawn
McFalls late in the game.
The Fury, play twicc this week
when they meet Bosnia in London
on Wednesday and host St.
George's Sunday.
