Linedancing and two-step lessons are filling up fast with Buckles Boots in Spurs

DASHWOOD - "It's very mind
boggling. At first, we were tripping
over our feet." Instructor Sharon
Romphf commented on how dif-
ficult it is to keep the steps straight
during the first few
weeks of linedancing
lessons. Once past
three or four weeks of
instruction, it won't
seem so overwhelming
and Linedancing can
become a great stress
reliever, source of ex-
ercise as well as a so-
cial outing.
Buckles, Boots 'n Spurs, a teach-
ing team which consists of Terry
and Sharon RomLhf and Joe and
Linda Arnold, got its start in-
structing line and coupies dancing
at the Dashwood Recreation Centre
last fall. Since then, interest in lin-
edancing has grown and now three,
eight week sessions are held by the
group throughout the year.
Romphf and Arnold always en-
joyed dancing but the interest in
Linedancing
really took off
when they en-
rolled in les-
sons in Sea -
forth.
"We fell into
this really,"
said Arnold.
Linedancing
is ideal for singles because a part-
ner is not needed. For those who
enjoy pair dancing, the group also
offers couples dancing lessons such
as the 'two-step'. Both styles are
addictive and the instructors said

they danced in a traditional style.
With Linedancing the pace can be
slow ' or fast and when con-
centrating on the steps, you can't
think about anything else. Two-
step and line dancing hold your in-
terest, remembering steps like 'slap
leather', 'kick, ball change' and
'vine'.
Besides learning a repertoire of
about 75 to 100 dances, including
the Dance Ranch Romp, Boot,
Scoot 'n Boogie and the Cowboy
Hip Hop, the instructors have to
find appropriate music for the level
they are teaching. Some of the
songs the dances may be choreo-
graphed for are too fast for be-
ginners. Romphf said they usually
have three alternative pieces for
each dance.
As members of the National
Teacher's Association, the Romphfs
have accreditation as instructors.
This association provides them
with a constant source of dance
sheets and opportunities to show-
case their talent.
'We are still taking lessons all
over the place, it has mushroomed
from there," said Romphf.
, Arnold credits part of the grow-
ing linedancing enthusiasm with
the advent of new country music.
Some people who may not have lis-
tened to old style western music
really enjoy the variety of con-
temporary artists who often cross
over into the pop music arena.
Both women stressed that linedanc-
ers can dance to any kind of music
including rock and roll. Because
the moves in Linedancing are based
on four or eight counts, they can be
adapted to almost any piece of mu-
sic.
