School raises funds for 30 warm beds
Huron Centennial Public School
raises money for beds in developing
world
BRUCEFIELD - Fifty children in developing coun-
tries will sleep a little easier thanks to the efforts of
the children at Huron Centennial Public
School.
Students and teachers took part in a fund-
raising campaign for SCAW (Sleeping
Children Around the World), which raises
money for bed kits for poor children.
The school raised $15,000, which trans-
lates into 50 bed kits at $30 each.
"Fifty children are going to sleep in good comfort-
able beds, just think about that," said Richard Hry-
niew, a volunteer with the SCAW program and a
principal 'at Arthur Stringer Public School in London.
"You should be proud of what you accomplished."
Hryniew visited Huron Centennial and presented
the children with the chance to help with SCAW. He
travels to schools, churches, even individual homes
to get people involved with the program.
A bed kit can vary from country to country, de-
pending on the local requirements. The kit includes a
normal bed that the child would sleep on such as a
mattress or a woven mat in India..It also includes
bedding such as sheets, a pillow, pyjamas, personal
toiletry items such as a toothbrush and soap, and a
change of clothing for the day.
"The kit can include more," said Hryniew. "$30
must be spent on each child, and they must meet the
minimum requirements and quality of the bed kit.
Each bed is expected to last for ten years."
All of the money raised goes directly to the kits for
children in deyeloping countries. Charitable groups
work to help with the distribution of the bed kits. In
Ecuador, one of the volunteer groups
who help distribute the kit is comprised
of beauty queens who do all sorts of
charitable work.
Hryniew will call ahead one year to
the overseas group, and let them know
how many kits will be needed. The
group then begins the manufacturing process, which
is all done locally.
"We provide enough employment to keep 100 fam-
ilies employed in India," said Hryniew. Over 10,000
bed kits are produced in India.
The volunteer organization then selects the re-
cipient children three months in advance, and gives
them a ticket which tells them when and where they
can pick up their kit.
"We watch to see that every child walks away with
their own bed kit," said Hryniew.
Groups that have donated their fundraising efforts
will receive a photograph of the children on their
new beds.
"These people will have a bed to sleep on, and a
better life to live," said Rob Spittal, treasurer of the
Students' Council at Huron Centennial.
"A bed to sleep
on and
a better life
' to live."
