Safety stressed in
Hensall bike rodeo
Ingrid Nielsen T -A Staff
HENSALL - Children as young as five and as old as 12 were learn-
ing the rules of the road on Saturday at the Hensall Arena, in a bike
satety event sponsored by the Hensall Optimist club.
After registering at the door and filling out a draw ticket, youngsters
lined up to have their bikes and knowledge tested for safety. The chil-
dren answered tough questions on a written bike knowledge test, that
was designed for different age groups. For example, kindergarten to
grade two children were asked, "Should you make your turn signals
with your right arm? Yes or No?"
Grade three to grade four students were asked, "When you ride after'
dark, all you need is a red reflector on the rear of your bike? True or
False?"
Grade five and six students were asked, "To indicate that you will be
stopping, your left arm points out and down? True or False?"
The event was held to "heighten awareness of bike safety," says
Alex Irvine, President of the Hensall Optimists. "We are testing all
around ability on a bike."
After the written test and the bike inspection, performed by John
Marshall from the Goderich OPP, youngsters Dustin Elder and Scott
Stire line up for the first "road test".
Jenna Dayman waited her turn in line on her bike. When Marshall
gives the word, she drove forward and between the narrow white lines.
Occasionally a stone is put in the way of the driver, and she must
show that she can steer around this obstacle. This event is about con-
trol. Another event has Michael Dayman approach an authentic -
looking Pedestrian Crosswalk sign. There are two lines on the ground
before the sign and the biker must stop before the correct line.
Youngsters must also demonstrate that they know their turn signals,
can maneuver their hike around tight turns, and ride on the proper side
of the road.
"We make pointers at the end of each test, and make them aware of
weaknesses in their driving," said Irvine.
At the end of the day, there were prizes for the student who scored
the highest in each category. The prizes were donated by Heywood
Sports in Clinton And local Hensall businesses. "They (Hensall busi-
nesses) are really good that way," says Irvine.
The Optimists also awarded a certificate for a brand-new bicycle to
the grand winner of the draw. Everyone was eligible for the draw. Sara
Rosenboom won the new bicycle.
Important bike safety tips were stressed. All bike riders are encour-
aged to wear a helmet, worn and fitted properly. Parents should also
set a good example for children by wearing their helmet.
Children should be well aware of all rules of the road, and respect all
vehicles on the road. This also means recognizing and correcting dan-
gerous bike behaviour such as riding double, wearing headphones, rac-
ing or performing stunts.
