The amounts given to each group varied according to the member's needs and the amount it is already funded by the government. The largest cheque went to Epi- lepsy Ontario -Huron for $17 509. Other groups that received funding include Huron Safe Homes for Youth, Girl Guides, Lambton Eld- erly Outreach - Grand Bend and Wheels Away. "Epilepsy Ontario -Huron doesn't get any government funding at all," says Connie Livingston, Executive Director of Huron United Way. "That's why they get the biggest share of United Way funding." Livingston was hoping to use the opportunity of giving out the cheques to bring all the groups to the same spot at the same time. However, only a handful of the members were able to show up. Those that did, expressed tre- mendous gratitude towards Li- vingston and the United Way. "Connie is wonderful," says Ani- ta Taylor, representing North Hu- ron Big Brothers and Huron Safe Homes for Youth. "We advertise United Way on all our stuff." When the group came together to discuss some of the common chal- lenges that they face, a persistent problem was people's lack of iden- tification with Huron County. "We have to have our offices somewhere, but where the office is located often brings the mentality of "Oh, that's a Clinton agency" or "that's an Exeter agency," says Li- vingston. She explains that many people in Huron will only identify them- selves with their town, while most of the agencies work on a county- wide basis, and need county -wide support. "With constant government cut- backs, in every area of the com- munity, we will have to work to- gether including medical associa- tions, social agencies, government groups...We can't just work in- dependently, we must band togeth- er," says Livingston. That problem gets exacerbated when some service clubs and local groups see fundraising as competi- tion, instead of everyone trying to help the community together, says Livingston. When describing the mission of the work done by the people present, Livingston describes it as, "We are trying to do good work for those less fortunate, and work with- in the community and the county." "Anyone would be hard-pressed to go down the a list and not find one agency that touches their life in some way." "I don't have all the answers," says Livingston. "All I can do is give plaques and cut cheques that aren't as big as I wish they could be." Connie Uvingston gives Vicky Piluke, representing Wheels Away and Girl Guides, a special hug, cheque and plaque for her organization's dedication to helping others. Member agencies of United Way In Huron reach for their cheques while showing off their plaques of recognition.
