STRATFORD OUT Of TOWN CALL (*01.766.3414 Tim Steele from Dashwood picks out a body-Iure he's going to use in the Grand Bend Salmon and Trout Derby running from May 13-22. By Chris Skalkos T -A staff GRAND BEND - __Yqu know they're down there. Patiently, you watch, and wait. Without warning, the end of your pole jerks violently. "Fish on!" You pick up the pole and brace it against your torso. Your adrenalin is pumping faster than the line spin- ning off your reel. With bare white knuckles you clench the fishing pole tightly and start reeling, trying desperately to resist the temptation to jerk and pull. The fight is on and this one is not getting away. "It's the most thrilling experience in the world," said fisherman Bob Green, and hundreds of avid an- glers will be experiencing the thrill of sport fishing May 13-22 during Grand Bend's 7th annual Salmon and Trout Derby. Last year over 900 tickets were sold with the largest fish weighing in at 21 'pounds. An estimated 300- 350 fish will be hooked during this year's derby as hope- ful fishermen pit their skills against each other and the fish to claim $4,000 worth of prizes, and of course, fish story bragging rights. "The atmosphere is very exciting. We have boats here from all over the place. It's a lot of fun especially when there's a lot of fish being caught," said Green, chairperson of the Grand Bend Salmon and Trout Derby and veteran fisherman. "It's we ferent th river fis there's a waiting. Green said the fish in Lake Hu- ron are a tough catch and it's not uncommon to fight for 20 minutes leaving you sore and exhausted. "It's very different from river fishing, there's a lot of waiting. But when you catch something it's not going to be 2 pounds, it's going to' be big," said Green. Due to the nature of this highly specialized fishing, expensive equipment and tackle are required so derby committee members are offering chartered boating services; including rod and tackle for $12. Dockage and launching is free all week for derby ticket holders. According to Green, sport fishing is growing in popularity each year and is becoming more of a family oriented event with line dances and fish fry dinners going on in con- junction with the derby. Organizers say it's still to early to tell if the fish will be in the "biting mood" for the next two weeks, it depends on the weather and the fish migration patterns. Even if the the fish aren't biting Green said it's a good way to get outdoors and learn about boating or re- sponsible fishing, add- ing that more fisher- men are practicing: catch and release. But Green agrees it's disappointing to come back to the dock "skunked" and everybody should go home with a fish story. "Words can't describe how it feels, it's an incredible experience to hook into a big salmon," Green said. ry dif- an hing, lot of 7.9 Juveniles p lay Seniors, Bill Shore from the Exeter Express tags out a Juvenile player, James Rolph, attempting to steal second base.
