Junior Achieve- ment of London and District, along with the Huron County Board of Education and the local business community have arranged for the delivery of "Business Ba- sics" programs fot students in Grades 5 and 6. In this new global economy, it is imperative that young people have a chance to learn more about small business and the career opportuni- ties that entrepreneurship provides. "Business Basics" utilizes activity - oriented lessons to demonstrate the structure and operations of small buiness. The program is delivered by trained volunteers from the lo- cal community who provide hands-on role modelling and busi- ness education. Business Basics is one of several programs offered by Junior Achievement, an international not - for profit organization providing business education to youth in or- der to promote and preserve the free enterprise system. It achieves this by bringing business, educa- tion and youth together for their mutual benefit. Junior Achieve- ment is unique in that it provides practical, leading edge programs which are delivered by experienced business people from the local community. This is the first year that Junior Achievement programs have been offered in Huron County. Funding for the Business Basics progem has • been generously provided by Local industries, business organizations and community groups. "Students are involved in every step of the process," says Vince Bonduro, the students' grade eight teacher. The class was split up into five groups. Each group was given the same parameters and resources, and was then expected to design a mod- el for the new playground. They had to incorporate things such as an area for older students, an area for the primary students, different at- tractions, and important safety con- siderations. "Our goal was to make it safe," says Glenn Kelly, one of the stu- dents involved. "Stuff in our model just needs to be checked up on, low maintenance. It's easier for us to make it safer because we just thought of all the accidents we had seen out in the yard before." The grade eight students also had to consider the opinions of all the students at St. Patrick's, and came to decisions based on survey re- sults. The new playground plan is to complement the existing play- ground which is currently mostly for the primary students. The new designs focus strongly on an area for "the intermediate students to gather and converse with their friends. To help with the transi- tional period between public school and highschool," says Bonduro. The project also works as an im- portant learning tool. "It integrates ail subject areas," says Bonduro. "Science, geography, math, art, and english in their aural presentations to the class." When the individual projects were complete, the students had to first present them to their class, and then to the rest of the students in the gym. While most of the grade eights say the aural presentations went well, Dax Biondi and Craig Leyes point out that it can be rough up there. "They chewed us apart. They chewed everybody apart. It was tough," says Biondi and Leyes. The project was displayed as part of Education Week at St.Patrick's, and is called "Creative Playground Design" from the Science and Technology career unit. It is sup- ported by the Catholic Parents Teachers Association School Coun- cil. The winning right: Selena captain). team proudly display their model for St. Patrick's new playground.
