South Huron District ,High School Drama presented Horseplay, a Canadian ru- ral musical comedy, May 3-5. The production in- volved many students in performance, music, crew and prop construction. Photos by Heather Mir Bell rings in Granton to commemorate VE day Monday, at 12:00 noon, the Anglican Church bell was rung for five minutes By Muriel Lewis GRANTON - VE Day was commemorated in Granton on Monday, May 8 at 12:00 noon when Muriel Lewis, Cathie Westman and Val Mid- dleton gathered at the entrance of St. Thomas' Anglican Church and rang the bell for five minutes. Car horns were then blown as they were joined by Shirley Middleton and Nora Wissel for further celebration at a VE Day luncheon at the North Star restaurant in Elginfield. At the St. Thomas' Anglican Church on Sunday, May 7 the Rev. Ste- phen-Iiimery celebrated the Holy Eucharist. His message was about God's resistance, that in the midst of life's struggles He is always near. The Anglican parish bible study group met at Nadene Bedell's place on Wednesday afternoon. . A vestry meeting was held at the St. Thomas' Anglican Church on Thursday night, May 4. At the Granton United Church on Sunday, Pastor Normalie Voakes' sermon was about the 'Voice of Our Shepherd'. Kurtis Hugh Hayes, son of Chris and Pamela Hayes was baptized by the minister when his brother Colin assisted by helping to prepare the water. The choir sang 'Rock of Ages' and also 'Forbid them not' at the conclusion of the baptism. The church was draped with the Canadian flag and Pastor Voakes had placed two yellow roses on the communion table, .commemorating the 50th anniversary of VE Day. Granton veterans who were present wore their medals proudly. UCW Unit one met on Thursday, May 4 at Madeline Hardie's home in Lu - can for a smorgasbord lunch at noon. President Doreen McRobert opened the worship with the hymn 'This is my Father's World' and gave lessons thoughts on the theme 'Decorat- ing Decorum'. The roll call was answered with readings and poems. Business discussion included final plans for the Mothers and Others on May 13 and the yard sale on May 27 at the park. Carlene Goos continued with the program, reading an article on 'Chil- dren talk about it to God'. Madeline concluded with a challenging word contest. Unit 2 met at Sherri McRobert's home on Monday night, May 1. Nan- cy Mills led the discussion when it was decided to go to Interiors in Lon- don on May 9 and have a barbecue social on June 25. Other upcoming events requiring further plans were the M&S Luncheon. yard sale and Fun Day. Dessert and tea were enjoyed. Unit five met at Margaret Spence's place on the afternoon of May 2. President Spence opened the meeting with a reading 'Still worthwhile' and gave the meditation on Obedience. God's first law. The hymn 'Safe in the arms of Jesus' was read. Mary Wallis was in charge of the pro- gram when she read 'Suddenly it's spring'. Margaret read 'Songs of spring' and Ina Harlton 'Another spring is along it's way.' 'Awakening' was read by Mary Jones, 'Time to sing' by Alma Nicholson, 'They told me spring would come' by Pearl Bryan, 'Welcome' by Verneta Baker', 'Yellow says yes in spring' by Florence McRobert, 'Renewal' by Made- line Baker. Mary Wallis concluded by reading an article on handicapped children, a Mother's Day poem and a reading 'Even the laundry list can contain great blessings.' Spence closed with 'Getting even with super wrench' written by Giselle Ireland, followed by prayer. Lunch was served by Ina Hariton. 4-H On May 3 the Granton 'Beauty Queens' 4-H club gathered at the home of leader Margaret Bryan when the 4-H president Colleen Moore opened the meeting with the 441 pledge. The Achievement night to he held on May 10 at the United Church was discussed and the group worked on their crossword puzzles from the pre- vious week. Guest speaker Heather Gillen arrived and the vice president Melanie Beatson was chosen to have a makeover while Heather ex- plained the importance of moisturizers, powders and how to use makeup without actually knowing it is there. The girls expressed their thanks and presented her with a gift. Everyone then enjoyed the snacks served by Lenny and Gemma Vandenberg and later closed with the 441 motto.
