East, Exeter 1 1 Steckle says, "I leave each Monday and Wednesday afternoon at 5 p.m. with a 17 foot truck loaded with plants at least five layers deep. I'm usual- ly back by midnight. Included in each load could be 300 hanging baskets five to six hundred four -inch pots and a couple of hundred flats of bedding plants." He added, " The Toronto wholesale market sure extends our sales sea- son. It takes care of the valleys in the demand for our products. This time of the year we also supply bedding plants to area grocery stores and other outlets. The owner continued, "We have all kinds of annual and perennial flow- ers. It's a great advantage for the customer to come right to the grow- er.They get a better selection right at the source. Access to all greenhouses is now available without going outside." - - The optimum temperature for most flowers and plants in the greenhous- es is 65 to 70 degrees with a few cooler crops such as pansies, primula and dianthus more comfortable at 55 to 60 degrees. Wednesday of last week, Huron Ridge Acres workers were transplanting tomato plants which will be ready for the gardener in about three weeks. In July, poinsettia root cutting are started for the Christmas trade and by the end of November, Easter lilies are started. Pansies and kale are stat:ted soon for the fall market. Many of the spring seedings are started at Christ- mas time. Available now is a wide variety of vegetable and flowering bedding plants along with foliage plants for interior decorations. The selection of perennials is one of the largest in Huron county. Out in full instant colour for Mothers Day will be geraniums, hanging baskets, wall bags and a wide variety of other flowers. Huron Ridge Acres takes great pride in the quality, variety and competi- tive pricing of all their nursery stock. ?hese include shade trees, fruit trees, evergreen shrubs, flowering trees and bushes, potted rose bushes and. ground covers. The Huron Ridge Acres Garden Centre has peat moss, potting soils, bark chips and mulch, fertilizers and chemicals and a full line of organic ferti- lizers and pesticides.
