Flowers and plants of all varieties
ready to go at Huron Ridge Acres
ZURICH - -After more than 22 years in business, Dave Steckle of Hu-
ron Ridge Acres says, "Customer satisfaction is a high priority for us in
providing everything needed by the do -it yourself home gardener and
flower admirer.
Steckle, along with his wife Carol and son Kevin started with a 2,000

square feet of inside growing area. The staff has grown to five or six per-
sons all summer long with another dozen employed in the present peak
season until at (east the middle of June.
Asked how many plants do you have at any one time, he replied, " I
don't have a clue, but it's likely well over a million."
In addition to retail sales at their R.R. 2, Zurich location, Huron Ridge
Acres wholesales to the Ontario Flower Growers Co -Op twice a week all
year round..

Steckle says, "I leave each Monday and Wednesday afternoon at 5 p.m.
with a 17 foot truck loaded with plants at least five layers deep. I'm usual-
ly back by midnight. Included in each load could be 300 hanging baskets
five to six hundred four -inch pots and a couple of hundred flats of bedding
plants."
He added, " The Toronto wholesale market sure extends our sales sea-
son. It takes care of the valleys in the demand for our products. This time
of the year we also supply bedding plants to area grocery stores and other
outlets.
The owner continued, "We have all kinds of annual and perennial flow-
ers. It's a great advantage for the customer to come right to the grow-
er.They get a better selection right at the source. Access to all greenhouses
is now available without going outside."
- - The optimum temperature for most flowers and plants in the greenhous-
es is 65 to 70 degrees with a few cooler crops such as pansies, primula and
dianthus more comfortable at 55 to 60 degrees.
Wednesday of last week, Huron Ridge Acres workers were transplanting
tomato plants which will be ready for the gardener in about three weeks.
