Mother, family and spring is theme Baptism to be held at Thames Road Church on Mothers Day By Rhoda Rohde THAMES ROAD - The May meeting of the UCW was held on Tuesday evening with 22 ladies and 1 visi- tor present. Beatrice Dawson welcomed everyone and gave the theme, "Mother, Family and Spring" and also the Call to Worship. The ladies sang "Part of the Family". Pat Ballantyne gave a reading "What Is A Mother?" Jean Duncan read the Scripture, Luke 10: 38-41 and also led in prayer. The offering was received by Duncan and Ballan- tyne. Dawson gave the Offertory Prayer. A reading "Spring Cleaning at My House" by Dun- can. A humorous skit "A Husband's Liberation" was giv- en by Dawson and Ballantyne. The ladies sang "As comes The Breath of Spring." Dawson introduced Gail Baker of Hensall who is a cosmetician. Kay Cunnington was the lucky draw win- ner. Baker did a make up on Cunnington which really looked nice, Baker was thanked and given a gift. Bea- trice Dawson conducted the business part of the meet- ing. The roll call was answered by bringing a plant for exchange. The minutes were read and the correspon- dence. Marilyn Pym gave the treasurers report, and Pat Bal- lantyne gave the Board of Managers report. The prices were set for the strawberry and ham supper on June 19. It was mentioned that Agnes Bray's musical recital is to be June 7. The visiting committee for the next four months are Group U. Doris Elford, Group C Rhoda Rohde and Group W Diane Jeffery. Pat Ballantyne brought the finished quilt that the la- dies had quilted recently for us to look at which really looked nice. We sang Would You Bless Our Home and Families and Beatrice closed the meeting with a poem "Home Sweet Home". Group C supplied graduation cake, tea and coffee for lunch which was delicious.This brought the meeting and a time of fellowship to a close. Church service Rev. Jim Allsop was in charge of the regular church service on Sunday morning. The responsive reading was taken from the service hook, "The Good Shepherd," Psalm 23. The choir sang "To God Be the Glory" accompanied by the organist Marilyn Vandenbussche. The childrens hymn "This Is the Day" was sung and Rev. Jim told the childrens story "Jesus the Good Shepherd". The scripture lesson Acts 9: 32-43 and Revelation 7: 9-17 was read by Diane Jeffery. Rev. Jim read from the Gospel of John 10: 11-18, 22-30 and the title of his sermon was "Listening to the voice of our good Shepherd." The closing hymn "As Comes the Breath of Spring" was sung. There were four beautiful baskets of flowers on the platform placed there in memory of Floyd Stewart. Coming events On Sunday May 14 Mother's Day there will be a baptism service in Thames Road Church at 11:15 a.m. May 28 Community of area churches are planning a worship service at Thames Road Church at 10:30 a.m. There will be practice next Sunday night May 14 at 7:30 p.m. at Thames Road. Everyone welcomed. Any- one who wishes to participate in the orchestra for thic9---- e Final plans made for Rebekah reception EXETER - Pride of Huron Rebe- kahs made their final plans for the reception in Exeter United Church May 17 at 6 p.m., honoring Sis. Lois McFalls who is Outside Guar- dian of the Rebekah Assembly of Ontario. Many lodges have been invited to the reception and to the meeting to follow in the church. Several sisters will be going to St. Marys to Hillcrest Rebekah Lodge's birthday party May 18, to Chaplain's Night in Dorchester June 5; and to Forest for Royalty's brithday June 6. All members are asked to donate baking to the bake sale May 13, outside our door or in case of rain, in the Purple Turtle. Baking to be in by 9:30 for sale starting at 10 a.m. The Humanitarian Services com- mittee is making donations to Camp Trillium, Leukemia and Aids Ministry. V.G. Sis. Helen Coates made a donation to Alzhei- mers in memory of Sis. Jean Ber- 1 ry. An evergreen tree will be pur- chased and planted in Exeter Cemetery as part of the Living Legacy Program. Donations were made to Exeter Fall Fair School Division and to the Homecraft Divsion. Sis. Adeline Ford had a hip re- placement and sisters Kay Hodgen and Dorothy Jones are in South Huron Hospital. Our Charter was draped in loving memory of Sis. Margaret Duckworth PAP, Sis. Alice Bowen PDDP, sis. Olga Chipchase PNG, Sis. Frieda Bier - ling, and Sis. Jean Berry. The birthday party will be June 7 when the Rebekah doll draw will take place. Two members will re- ceive their Veterans Jewels. Mem- bers are asked to invite any mem- ber who has not been coming to the meetings, to come to the birth- day party. Sis. Kay Green will be celebrating her 90th birthday at Exeter United Church May 21, 2-4 p.m. Come and help her celebrate. special service will meet next week after the combin choir practice at 8:30 p.m. Sunday June 4 Thames Road Sunday school children will be joining the Elimville Sunday School children on their M & S Walk-a-thon. Personals Quite a number of people from the area attended the open house for Ken and Ruby Simpson at K & W Community Centre last Sunday in honour of their 50th wedding anniversary. Several people from this area attended the open house for John and Phyllis Rodd at Woodham United Church on Saturday. Congratulations on our 40th wed- ding anniversary. Beatrice Dawson attended the christening of her granddaughter Lindsay Nicole daughter of Larry and Melissa Dawson at Assumption Church Aylmer on Sunday and then a guest later with Larry and Melissa. Several people from this area attended the musical night at Central United Church on Sunday evening. It was well worth attending. Outreach banquet held in Centralia EXETER - There was lots of good food and good fellowship as the Sunday School hosted their an- nual outreach banquet. Guest speaker, Jason Hams from Lon- don, shared a message on 'The Living Water" and also ministered in song. Eleven beautiful table centrepieces made by a group of girls at Wednesday night Lost and Found Club, were given as door prizes. The youth enjoyed an excellent evening watching videos on big screen along with impressive sound effect as well at Youth for Christ on Saturday night. We arc very proud of Centralia's Faith - walkers quiz team who have stud- ied so hard and diligently over the past months. Congratulations to Brad Claus, Becky Coward, Nanci Kuranyi, Melissa Morgan, Adam Prout, Crystal Russell, Melissa Snell, Marcy Swance, Patty Wood and leaders Lori and Scott Craw- ford. Quizzing will begin again in September. The congregation are looking for- ward to celebrating their 30th anni- versary on May 27 and 28. Special guest speakers will be Rev. Harry Wuerch on Saturday May 27 at 7 p.m. and again on Sunday morning. In the evening service the Rever- end Dr. James Beal from Bethesda Christian Church in Sterling Heights Michigan will be minister- ing. The Youth Group have rounded up their buckets, rags and buffers for their fund raising car wash on Saturday in Exeter. Watch for their • signs and help support the youth.
