Income should be your
first consideration
Grade 12 students from South Huron District High School have sub-
mitted articles to the T -A which are based on their recent research in
the area of consumer awareness. One of these consumer articles will
run in the next three issues on the business page. We wish to extend
our congratulations on their excellent efforts.
Buying a vehicle
by Tanya Stegmeier
When you decide to buy a vehicle, the first thing you should consid-
er is your income. If it is such that you can manage payments on a new
vehicle, a careful reading of car -buying magazines, consumer guides,
and related information is very helpful. The consumer guide will list
the more popular vehicles and detail their performance, safety features,
approximate price, and rate each vehicle on its reliability.
Japanese -made vehicles seem to be most recommended overall: but
the disadvantage is that the purchase price is higher and repairs tend to
be more expensive as well as needed often after the first two years.
Cheaper vehicles are not always unreliable, but have more tendency to
be. However, price is not an indication of quality, as some models of
the pricey Jaguar, Porsche, and Volkswagen are not
recommended.
If you are short on finances or just don't want to
lay out the cash or take on payments for a new ve-
hicle, than use care is an inexpensive alternative.
Spending Tess money on a vehicle means you can
change it if you don't like it, since you don't have
as much tied up in it. Also, a wreck is not such a great loss. But if you
do decide to go the cheaper way, some mechanical knowledge, or bet-
ter yet, a mechanic friend, is a great help.
Used cars are very plentiful, because everybody wants get rid of
their "problem wheels". So there are many things to watch out for
when you decide to go the used route.
Once you decide what you want in a vehicle and the price you want
to pay, then you can check either the used car dealership, auto trader
magazines, or classified ads. It's often safer buying a used car from the
owner because the dealers use many different selling tricks to control
overpopulation on the lot.
Perhaps the most important thing to remember when shopping for a
vehicle is the Latin saying "Habeas corpus" (Buyer Beware). As long
as you are well informed of what is available and what you want, you
have a good chance on being happy with your new (or used) wheels.
Take advantage of other's wisdom and past experience, don't fall for
fast -talking salesmen, and you will likely score well in your car buy-
ing.

Enumeration begins May 4
TORONTO, May 4 - The enu-
meration of all eligible voters in
Ontario for the 36th Ontario
-eneral Election begins Thursday,
May 1Ith and continues until
Wednesday, May 17th. Over
40,000 enumerators, working in
pairs, will enumerate more than
six million electors within four
days.
To be eligible to vote in this elec-
tion, individuals must be 18 years
of age on election day, a Canadian
citizen at the time of voting and a
resident of Ontario for the six
months prior to election day.
No information is requested by
enumerators concerning an elec-
tor's marital status or occupation.
Individuals may choose to register
their initials in place of given
names and there is no requirement
to indicate Mr., Mrs., Miss, or Ms.
prefixes.
The enumeration will be done by
pairs of enumerators appointed by
the Returning Officer in each of
the province's 130 electoral dis-
tricts. In undertaking their duties,
enumerators, carrying formal iden-
tification, will:
- visit each household to deter-
mine the names of all qualified
electors in the residence.
- provide each enumerated elec-
tor with a FORM 301, an
enumeration receipt listing the
elector's name, electoral district,
poll number and polling place.
- ask questions relating only to
voter qualifications.
When enumeration takes place in
apartment and other multi -dwelling
buildings, the Election Act requires
that enumerators have free access.
