Back in Time...
By Ross Haugh from the archives of
the Exeter Times Advocate
May 1, 1985 - Two members of the Exeter midgets were among
the 68 players who gathered in Chatham over the weekend for a
whirlwind two-day camp to identify talent for the under -17 Ontario
midget hockey team. Representing Exeter were defenceman. Tim
Moore and centre Bryan Quinn.
Two sold -out shows and lineups that started more than an hour
early showed how much Exeter youngsters love the Sharon, Lois
and Bram show.
May, 1970 - At a special meeting, the Huron Board of Education
approved their 1970 budget showing an increase of almost a million
and a half dollars, being up 15.3 percent.
Sunday, the Exeter Pentecostal congregation officially established
itself in its new quarters in the former Main street United Church
building where a dedication service was performed.
In case you have forgotten, today is "deadline day". It's the final
day to drive with studded tires and also the final date for filing 1969
tax returns. The former is to prevent "gouging".
A long hockey season came to a happy end Sunday as the Lucan-
Ilderton Jets won the first OHA Intermediate "B" championship in
the history of the district with an exciting victory over Napanee.
May 4, 1945 - To help reduce the sugar shortage, Canada and Do-
minion Sugar Company of Wallaceburg has announced that many
thousands of acres more of sugar beets have been contracted than in
1944. Ontario's goal is 25,000 acres with a $9 floor price at the fac-
tory and $11 for 16 percent beets. Some growers made over $200
per acre last year.
Playing at Leavitt's Theatre this week are "Marriage is a Private
Affair" starring Lana Turner and John Hodiak and "Much Too Shy"
with George Formby.
Total Red Cross receipts from January to April 11 amounted to
$1 1,728.61.
The public is invited to see the first annual inspection parade of
the Exeter High School Cadets. Their new uniforms arrived last
week.
The fire siren pealed forth its shrill notes Saturday evening when
the news came through that peace had been declared in Europe.
Crowds thronged the streets thinking at first that a fire had broken
out. A few stores soon had flags flying from their windows. It was
not long before it was learned the announcement was premature.
May 3, 1920 - Mr. Charles Godbolt of Usborne township won first
for heavy duty draught team in harness at both the Hensall and Clin-
ton spring fairs.
Mr. Casper Walper has purchased the hotel from A. Johnston and
Son in Zurich.
The high school board has put in a considerable number of new
books in the school library and also a large quantity of biological
specimens.
May 2, 1895 - In Kirkton it is believed some of the families in our
village who allow their youngsters to roam around until 10 or 11 at
night would be acting kindly to their children if they compelled
them to get home at an earlier hour.
R. Pickard and Son are putting on a gigantic sale to reduce their
stock by $10,000. They are selling 28 pounds of Valencia raisins for
one dollar, boy's and men's felt hats for twenty-five cents and wall-
paper prices begin at three cents a roll.
The Molsons bank is offering to advance money to good farmers
on their own note with one or more endorsers at 7 percent per an-
num.
Mr. Thomas Ward of Varna has just sold four, two-year-old steers
weighing 5,300 pounds. They were sold for six cents a pound for
May delivery.
Mr. Fred Hess, the famous Zurich carriage builder has a large
number of buggies on the way. They are a fine looking lot of rigs.
The enterprising firm of A. Bishop and Son have just added a well
gotten up delivery wagon to their business. The vehicle was manu-
factured by D. Braund and Son of Exeter.
