World-wide research is being done to make the life
of a diabetic much easier. How? An infrared spec-
troscopic device that will measure blood glucose
through the skin (no finger prick!); an efficient nee-
dleless insulin injection via a high pressure syringe
that "pushes" the insulin through the skin; a device that measures
blood glucose and injects insulin simultaneously.
Of course the idea of implanting insulin -producing cells is still possible.
Last year, a 38 -year old diabetic on insulin for 30 years, became insulin -
free after this procedure. It needs more research, but looks promising.
A British drug company has recently launched a new home fest for fertili-
ty... for men. Evidently, some 40-50% of infertility is due to problems
with sperm and this test will determine sperm concentration. Cost is a
little over $50 per kit and so far, is not available in North America.
"Rosacea" a skin condition, sometimes called adult acne, is quite a
common problem especially in women between 30 and 40 years of age.
Characteristics are intense flushing and inflammation around nose that
can lead to acne -like spots and pustules. It is treatable with antibiotics.
