Principals
will decide
kindergarten
classes
St. MARY'S - Perth County
Board of Education recommend-
ed that the schools offer integrat-
ed or separate junior kindergart-
en. The schools involved are St.
Mary's Central, Listowel Cen-
tral, Listowel Eastdale, Mitchell
Public, Milverton and Spruce -
dale. The Board however, did
not make the decision on how to
implement JK, but instead voted
10 to 5 to leave that decision up
to the principal of each school.
The principal will then consult
with the superintendent, and the
decision will be made whether
to blend junior and senior kin-
dergarten students, or have sep-
arate classes.
Central School principal Gerry
Krug wants to involve parents in
the decision to mix or not.
"We can't promise they'll get
everything they ask for, but we'll
do our best," says Krug.

Breach of probation,
assaults, drinking charges
bring fines, jall terms
EXETER - In Exeter Provincial Court on April 25, Judge R.G.E.
Hunter handed out jail terms and levied fines on a variety of charges
ranging from assault, breach of probation, driving while disqualified
and driving with blood alcohol contents over the legal limit.
Driving while over limit
Scott Essex of Goderich pleaded guilty to a charge of operating a
vehicle while his blood alcohol content was over the legal limit of .8.
He will appear in Goderich court on June 12 for sentencing.
On August 1, 1994 at about 11.15 p.m., a motorist informed the
Lucan OPP detachment that a vehicle was proceeding north on High-
way 4 in an erratic fashion.
Two officers were dispatched and observed the vehicle to be weav-
ing back and forth. By this time, the accused was over the county
border into Huron county and was apprehended by Exeter OPP Con-
stable Kern. At the Exeter detachment his breathalizer readings were
1.15 and .98 •
Tim Lawrence of Port Franks was fined $1,000 on a similar drink-
ing and driving charge and
his driving licence sus-
pended for 12 months.
At 12.01 a.m. on October
16, 1994. the accused's ve-
hicle was seen pulling into
the Saan parking lot on
Main street. After two
minutes it proceeded south
to Sanders street where it was stopped by Constable Penn.
The accused told police he knew he was impaired and was only try-
ing to get home. At the Exeter OPP detachment the alcohol breatha-
lizer readings were recorded as 2.45 and 2.37.
To appear for sentencing
Shirley Memmott of Exeter will appear in court on May 23 for sen-
tencing after pleading guilty to a charge of assault which is alleged to
have taken place at Braemor Lodge in Exeter.
The court heard the accused pushed another resident off a chair
onto a cement deck. She was on probation at the time.
Breach of probation
As the result of a joint submission by the crown and his lawyer,
Derek Bierling of Huron Park was fined $750 on charges of breach
of probation and harrassment.
Already on probation two months earlier, the accused was alleged
to have pounded on the door of a controlled entrance apartment in
Exeter and shouted obscenities.
Ayother probation breach
Robert McLinchey of Hensall was fined $750 on a charge of
breach of probation. He was one of five occupants found in a vehicle
on November 4, 1995 by Constables Sadler and Finch with open al-
cohol in the vehicle and more in the trunk.
At first the accused denied drinking, but friends said he was.
McLinchey had been placed on probation on November 8,1993 with
a condition not to consume any alcoholic beverages.
In sentencing, Judge Hunter said, " You made it through 18 months
of your probation, but that's not enough." Defence lawyer Mike Don-
nelly contended it was a minor breach of probation.
Jailed for 90 days
Gordon McDonald of Exeter was ordered to jail for a total of 90
days after pleading guilty to charges of issuing threats, assault and
failing to comply with a bail condition. The jail term will be served
intermittently from noon on Saturdays to 9 p.m. on Sundays.
On November 14, 1994 McDonald was alleged to have issued
threats and using profane language over the telephone. On December
7 he was observed looking into a window of a residence on Anne
street.
The assault charge was for striking a seven year-old girl. He said he
was sorry for this and has since been taking counselling for anger
control.
More over .80 convictions
Kenneth Johns of Staffa was fined $50 as the result of an incident
which occurred on Highway 83 in Exeter. Police noticed a vehicle
travelling east at 8.25 p.m. on October 1, 1994 without lights.
When stopped by the police, the accused admitted he had a couple
of beers and was picking his son up at a tavern. Officers found a
strong odour of alcohol on his breath and he was alleged to be sway-
ing on his feet and his speech was slow. His breathalizer readings
were 1.07 and 1.0
A similar fine of $750 was assessed against Darrell Moore of Hu-
ron Park. On November 12, 1994, Constabie Brennan was called to
Albert street in Exeter where he found the accused slumped behind
the wheel of his vehicle with the motor running.
The charge was for having care and control of a vehicle while hav-
ing blood alcohol over the prescribed limit. The breathalizer readings
at the Exeter OPP detachment were 1.70 and 1.68.
Fred Groves of London was also fined $750 for driving with a
blood alcohol content over .80. After responding to a disturbance call
at Centralia, Constable Finch found the accused's vehicle proceeding
north on Highway 4 and it crossed the centre line. At the OPP detach-
ment breathalizer readings of 1.40 and 1.30 were recorded.
Vatthana Boulom of Huron Park will pay a fine of $750 after plead-
ing guilty to operating a vehicle while having a blood alcohol content
over the legal limit.
While Constable Finch was observing traffic on Highway 4 at 8.35
p.m. on March 26, 1995, he stopped a vehicle operated by the ac-
cused heading north to Exeter. Boulom was found to have slurred
speech and a strong odour of alcohol. At the OPP detachment brea-
thalizer readings were 1.50 and 1.50.
All four of the above will have their driving licences suspended for
12 months.
Driving while disqualified
Robert Lease of Stratford was sent to jail for 30 days on a charge of
operating a vehicle while disqualified. The term will be served on
weekends from 9 a.m. Saturdays to 6 p.m. Sundays. He was cau-
tioned not to consume any alcohol beverages for 24 hours before re-
porting to Stratforo jail.
120 days in jail
Brian Gibson of Lucknow was sentenced to four months in jail on
charges of breach of probation and driving with an over the limit
blood alcohol content.
At 9.35 p.m. on November 11, 1994, Constable Kern observed a
vehicle travelling north on Highway 4 in Usborne township without
lights. He found the accused to have a strong alcohol odour on his
breath and had trouble finding his licence. The breathalizer readings
at the Exeter OPP detachment were 1.78 and 1.67
After the court heard of a lengthy previous record, the Crown in-
formed Judge Hunter that the accused faces a more recent similar
charge in Walkerton and is presently in custody in that town. The jail
term will be served in Walkerton. His driving licence will be sus-
pended for throe years.

French
Immersion
registration
insufficient to
start in 1995
CLINTON - The registration for
French Immersion programs at Rob-
ertson and Exeter public schools
was insufficient to start the pro-
grams for the 1995-1996 school
year.
Robertson had only four students
registered while Exeter had 12. A
survey was sent to parents of chil-
dren in the Huron County school
system. The results indicated 57 in-
dividuals in the county would be in-
terested in immersion. The greatest
interest for middle immersion was
indicated to be in Exeter.
The education committee report
announced an AD HOC committee
for meeting April 10 to discuss how
to increase the awareness of stu-
dents of immersion for the future.
Superintendent Ralph Wareham
noted to the committee a French Im-
mersion program would need to be
comparable to the average class size
in the school concerned.

EXETER - Since December, four
children from Ontario have been
found after being abducted, due to
the services of Child Find Ontario.
With the alarming number of
children abducted everyday, Child
Find provides an effective iden-
tification service to help find a
child that has been lost.
On Saturday, Huron County
Child Find and the Exeter OPP held
an identification session called
"Kid Check" in the old OPP station,
where 50 children were finger
printed. Parents were also given the
form with the prints to fill out all
the relevant data about the child. A
current photo of the child's face is
also to be attached to the form.
The record is kept by the parents,
,and used if an emergency arises.
"If something happens to the
child, they have it right there
handy," says Marg Dale, a vol-
unteer with Child Find.
Child Find recommends re -doing
the prints and updating the photo
every year and a half, when the
child is small.
"They get cuts on their fingers,
and things can change," says Dale.
Children as young as newborns
can be printed. They often have
their footprints done.
The Kid Check service will be
provided again on Saturday, May
'13 in Goderich at the local Legion
hall.
There will also be an Child Find
information booth at the Non -
Violence presentation at the rec-
reation centre in Zurich, on May 6.
