K -W Optimists host successful fish fry

GRANTON - Several people
from the Granton area enjoyed the
beef supper sponsored by Lucan
•United Church on Wednesday,
April 20th,
Granton WI members attended a
euchre and social sponsored by
Clandeboye WI in Clandeboye on
Tuesday. Nora Wissel won an afri-
can violet for having a Lucky chair.
Former Granton resident Jean
(Keith) Berry died on Saturday at
Witdwood care Centre, St. Marys.
Sympathy from this community is
extended to her family and friends.
Stephen Mayo of RRi Granton
won and earphone radio and Easter
basket in the draw at the Granton
Food and Video Store.
Becky Kindree hosted the Opti-
mist luncheon and euchre at the
Masonic Hall on Friday when Jim
Bakker had the high score and eve-
ryone received prizes.
A huge crowd enjoyed the Optimist
Fish Fry at the KW Community
Centre on Sunday evening includ-
ing a number • from the Granton
area.
The Anglican parish bible group
met at the rectory in Kirkton on
Wednesday.
Several ladies from the St. Thom-
as Anglican Church attended the
spring deanery ACW meeting at St.
James Anglican Church, St. Marys
on Wednesday evening.
At the S!. Thomas Anglican Church
on Sunday Rev. Stephen Emery's
message was about the need to know
about God's unconditional love
through the Redemption of Jesus
Christ.
At the Granton United Church on
Sunday, Pastor Normalie Voakes enti-
tled her sermon "Eye Witnesses"
based on Acts 5 and John 20. During
the children's time, Amy McRobert,
Tiffany Blom, Michael Wheeler and
Greg Bilyea took part in the celebra-
tion of Earth Week with April Bryan
telling the story. They also planted a
tree at the front of the church during
Sunday School. Darren Waters was
the pianist and the choir sang the Old
Rugged Cross.
Optimist draw winner
SHDHS teacher Jim Workman's visit to the Optimist Home and Garden Show had an extra
bonus as he was the lucky winner of a $1,000 travel voucher from Ellison Travel. Shown

Discuss Granton water
LUCAN - A discussion on the
deficit situation on the police vil-
lage of Granton water system was
discussed at the April 4 meeting of
Biddulph township council.
:Councillor .Paul Wallis asked if
the township' hed •ialit ctmenta-
tion regarding the deficit for the
said system.
He was told by clerk -treasurer
Larry Hotson that an official report
at the end of December, 1994 ad-
vised of a deficit of $20,677. Hot -
son was directed to request reports
for the first three months of 1995
so council can ascertain if they are
staying ahead of expenses.
Consulting engineers Spriet As-
sociates have been appointed to
prepare a report which would pro-
vided drainage on Lots 31, 32 and
33, Concession 2 and 3 in the town-
ship.
The petition for these drainage
works was submitted by Robert
Taylor and signed by the majority
lof affected landowners.
The treasurer tabled a report on
the new construction assessment as

sessment calculated into 1995 bud-
get the increase will be 2.92
percent.
Hotson also pointed out that the
reduced recycling costs will further
reduce the local portion of the total
tax bill.
Council voiced no objection to an
application from Crossroads Res-
taurant to proceed with simulcast
wagering on harness horse racing
in their establishment.
Road superintendent Hugh Davis
presented tenders on three road de-
partment contracts and recommend-
ed that the lower prices be accepted
for each project.
C.K. Carter won the contract for
"B" gravel to be used on recon-
struction of Concession 2. Inline
Fencing will be paid $25 each for
drilling holes and setting posts in
cement for the corner signs for the
upcoming 911 emergency program.
The contract to supply and spread
calcium chloride was let to Pollard
Bros. for $189.50 per tonne.

Granton WI
Elsie Dann was the hostess for the
Granton Women's Institute evening
meeting on April 18. Muriel Lewis
read Easter Thoughts and silence was
observed in memory of Margaret Oak-
ley and Florence Riddell. In Memori-
am poems were read by Elsie Dann
and Oliver Hodgins.
The programme consisted of read-
ings and poems when "The Colour of
Spring" was given by Muriel, "Just a
Housewife" by Florence Bryan, "Safe-
ty Tips and A Song of Spring" by El-
sie, "Sale Night" by Olive and "Fred-
dy Gets A Haircut" by Florence
McRobert.
The roll call was answered by the
paying of fees and the annual finan-
cial statement was read by Florence
McRobert. The district annual will
be held at Beechwood on May 11,
and donations were made to Pen-
nies For Friendship and the County
Ratty fee. Invitations - were re-
ceived for the 4-H achievement
night on May 10 and a Tweedsmuir
History Tea on May 3. The next
meeting is rescheduled for Mon-
day, Mat 15. Refreshments were
served by Elsie.
Granton 4-H club
The Granton 4-H club met at thge
home of the leader Margaret Bryan
on April 19. After opening with
the 4-H pledge the title pages were
set out and Krystal Harrigan's was
voted as the best design. Then the
achievement night was discussed
and the group did a game compar-
ing and judging running shoes.
Sherry McRobert was the guest
speaker on care of the feet. She
demonstrated on Colleen Moore
and learned of any problems the
girls had and told them how to cor- '
rect them especially by wearing the
proper type of shoes. Lenny Van-
denburg thanked Sherry and pre-
sented her with a plant.
The girls then enjoyed snacks
served by Lorraine Pacheco and
Colleen Moore. Beth Densmore
was the secretary and reporter.
