Mohawks a major issue at
Rec Centre board meeting
By Chris Skalkos
T -A staff
EXETER - Keeping the Senior
"A" Mohawks in Exeter was the
dominating issue at the South Hu-
ron Recreation and Community
Centre's board meeting on Thurs-
day.
The Rec board has been trying to
rearrange ice time to keep the Sen-
ior "A" Mohawks in Exeter, how-
ever the Hensall Arena has made
the hockey club an attractive offer
to play out of Hensall.
After talking to the coaches and
executives of the teams that now
occupy the prime -time rink hours,
the Exeter Rec Centre can only of-
fer the Mohawks 8:00 Saturday
night game -time and they would
have to practice elsewhere. Mean-
while Hensall promised the Sunday
night ice -time the Hawks wanted
with reasonable practice times.
Chan Livingston said that he Rec
Board needs to give the Mohawks
better ice -time or else run the risk
of losing senior hockey in Exeter.
"I think senior hockey in this
town is necessary. We need to take
a good look at senior hockey in this
town...we should give them some-
thing better than Saturday night
[game -times]," said Livingstone.
Kathy Campbell reminded the
board members that the Mohawks
were told the Rec Centre couldn't
reserve their preferred ice -time for
them.
"It's not fair to juggle the teams
around after we told them we
couldn't hold ice -time for them,"
she said.
Pat Down agreed with Campbell.
"Let the Mohawks try to make Sat-
urday nights a go. They were the
ones that made Sunday the big
draw. Good hockey can draw a
good crowd," said Down.
Board Chairman, Mike Soldan
felt that the Mohawks belong in Ex-
eter.
"I personally can't see the Mo-
hawks playing out of Hensall, I
don't think it will work. if there's
going to be a Mohawk team it's got
to work out of this building," he
said. "No matter what we do we're
not going to have happy custom-
ers."
There will be an 8:00 meeting to-
night (Wednesday) atthe Rec Centre
by club executives to decide wheth-
er or not to revive the team and
which arena the Mohawks will call
home.
The board also discussed the ex-
cellent response to the March break
programs this year.
The youth bingo game boasted
187 youngsters, more participants
than there were cards available,
and 90 prizes were donated by lo-
cal businesses for the event.
The Youth Road Hockey Tourna-
ment was also a community fa-
vourite with children and parents
alike as thirty teams consisting of
120 youngsters participated in the
three day event. Because the ex-
penses to run the event were so low
the Rec Centre was left with a sur-
plus.
"The purpose of the programs
isn't to make money, it's designed
to give the kids something to do for
the March break but we ended up
making $500," said Recreation Di-
rector Lynne Farquhar.
Upcoming events were outlined
at the meeting as the Rec Centre
prepares for a busy Spring. Tickets
for the Sunny Knight Comedy
show scheduled for May 13 are
selling fast and judging by the last
year's show Lynne Farquhar pre-
dicts it will bo one of the main
highlights of the year.
A full array of activities demon-
strations are also planned for the
Rec Centre's "summer active" pro-
gram during the May 15-31 Fit
Week.
