The young hockey players from Exeter were recognized at an Awards Day event held in the Rec Centre on Sunday. The team coaches were responsi- ble for highlighting and rewarding three individual players from each club and most coaches agreed, they were tough decisions to make. Considering the amount of talent spread among the players and the successful track records some of these teams are boasting, Exeter has a lot to be proud of. Exeter Minor Hockey Associa- tion President, Don Richardson congratulated all of the coaches and young hockey players for executing a successful season. "I'm very proud of the way the kids presented themselves at home and at games away from home," said Richardson. The players from Exeter had earned a reputation of being hard- working, courteous and self- disciplined athletes among oppos- ing teams from across the region. The highlight of the year was of course the Exeter Legion Auxiliary Peewees putting Exeter on the map by winning the 1994-95 Ontario "CC" championship. The Peewees clinched the OMHA crown after sweeping Prince Edward County Kings in three games straight. At an additional awards ceremo- ny held at the Legion later that day, Peewee coach Bob McDonald re- leased the statistics on individual team members he has been holding on to all year. McDonald said that he never gave the players their stats midway through the season because he thought it would inflate their ego and affect their game. Impressive is the word that best describes the overwhelming figures the team earned during the season. The Peewees won 43 out of 56 games played. They had six ties and only lost seven games. Two back to back losses was as close as the Peewees came to a losing streak and a 17 game winning rampage marked their longest winning streak. The Peewees had only four games all season where they had four goals scored against them. They scored a total of 271 goals and goalie Ryan Sullivan recorded seven shutouts. The Peewees awarded their fust star to Jeff Campbell who recorded an extraordinary 74 goals and 62 assists for a total of 136 points. The second star award went to Kian MacDougall and the third star award was split between Jason Grenier and Scott Keys. Coach McDonald ended the eve- ning with two messages for the mi- nor hockey players. "The guys that didn't get picked [for an award] shouldn't feel bad. They should be proud of thein - selves because everybody played well," he said. Adding to the players that did receive trophys: "Remember the rest of the guys on your team because they are a part of your awards." Darren Kints delivers a pitch in the second game during the Exeter Juveniles double- header against St. Marys on Sunday. Exeter Juveniles win first game of season EXETER - The Exeter "River- view Estates" Juveniles played a double- header against St. Marys at the Alvin Willert Field on Sun- day. If the game is any indication of how the rest of the season is going to turn out, coaches Gary Hartman and Bill Hodge should be making room on their trophy shelves. The juveniles won a lopsided victory over the visiting St. Marys team 8-0 in the first game and won again 1-0 in game two. Dwayne McNab took to the pitcher's mound first throwing for Exeter. He allowed two hits, struck out one batter and walked two during the first four innings. Dwight Gingerich pitched the last three innings allowing one hit, striking out two hatters and wacky ing two. Exeter was strong behind the lumber in the first game getting hits from six different hatters. Scot Kemp recorded a double and a single, Dale Hopf hit two singles and Blake Schade chalked ups double. Other singles for Ex- eter came from Trevor Taylor, James Rolph and Jason Maskell. The St. Marys team was starting to get a little impatient with the zero staring at them from the scoreboard. They tried three times to steal the runs they couldn't earn offensively but were thrown out behind the plate by Dale Hopf. The second game took on a slower pace. Scot Kemp got a dou- ble but the game remained score- less until James Rolph singled in bottom of the seventh, stole sec- ond Kase and scored the only run on a play with Darryl Hartman driving the ball up centre field. Darren Knits was spectacular on the mound throwing a no hitter during the first four innings, strik- ing out three batters and walking one. Pitcher Darryl Hartman took over for the remainder of the game allowing one hit, striking out four and walking one hatter. St. Marys failed to score a run during the second game due to Exeter's strong defensive playing up the middle and good solid pitching. Scott Kemp also caught a fine game behind the plate. Despite the cool temperatures Exeter's pitching was right on target allowing only four hits in 14 innings from four different pitchers. Coach Gary Hartman was quite happy with the Juvenile's play for a game this early in the season and is hoping for a repeat performance Sunday when they meet the visiting Hanover team for an exhibition gamer After leaving the Western On- tario Baseball Association (W.O.B.A) last year the Exeter Juvenile team is looking forward to an interesting season playing, for the first time, in the London District Baseball Association where they will be meeting some high calibre teams.
