Students adopt cleaner highways
EXETER - The students of SHDHS are doing their
part to keep Ontario beautiful. Over 40 high school
students have adopted two stretches of highway 4
north and highway 83 south, both beginning at the
town limits.
The environmental science students have commit-
ted to keeping three kilometers of these two high-
ways clear of refuse by getting out four times a year
to pick up garbage.
They were out in full force last Monday and Tues-
day collecting an estimated 40 garbage bags full of
litter.
George McEwan, a SHDHS teacher organized the
adopt -a -highway program after noticing other com-
munities doing it. McEwan hopes he can incorporate
the students garbage picking efforts into the class-
room by conducting a statistical study on the volume
of garbage collected.
"The students are responding well," said McEwan,
who noted that it was a chance for students to break
the monotony of sitting in a classroom. "Nobody
tried to bag off, everyone made an effort and we have
a spanking clean highway four."
