game was marked by constant end

The obvious size advantage of
the Port Carling players didn't in-

Stephen Atom Sonics take
first two games of series
in All -Ontario championship
HURON PARK - The Stephen Township arena was
the place to be this past weekend. If you were there,
you know exactly what I mean. If you were absent,
you missed some great hockey action!
It was the place to see not only one all -Ontario
championship team take on their opponent but two.
One of those teams was the Stephen Township Atom
"Sonics" who came away with two duplicate wins of
6-5 on Saturday and Sunday against Ops Township
(near Peterborough).
The Atoms now travel to Ops Township arena to
play game three and four on April 8 and 9.
Stephen 6 - Ops 5
A game that kept all fans in suspense until the final
buzzer went saw Stephen take their second win in their
three out of five championship series.
On Sunday, the home team got on the board after 10
minutes of play with a shot from Brayden Lord assist-
ed by Jesse Schroeder.
Stephen's opponents tied the score at I-1 quickly in
the second period but the home team went ahead again
two minutes later with an unassisted goal by Roman
Wilson.
Ops replied again with a goal and the score was left
at a 2-2 tie at the end of the second period.
Stephen goalie Gary Sauder helped the score stay
even with three big saves with one of those being a
breakaway.
When the buzzer went to begin the third period,
Ops' players came out flying and scored twice in a
three minute span.
But the Sonics didn't hang their heads and give u
they rallied together and got their first goal with 7:3
left in the third period from Schroeder assisted by Hen-
ny Pfaff. This goal was 20 seconds into a power play.
Sonics scored again with another great effort by af-
filiated player Wilson with his second of the night as-
sisted by Davies.
With the score tied and only six minutes remaining,
Stephen took the lead as Davies tapped in a rebound
from a shot by Wilson, assisted by Colin Sauder.
Keeping the momentum going, Lord broke out of his
own end two on one, and made a perfect pass to Dix-
on, a teammate and linemate for several years, who
netted the winner.
Ops came within one goal with 40 seconds remain-
ing in the game but Stephen held on to the win.
Dick Lord, Sonics coach, felt his team played a
strong game. There were several penalties to both
teams but the boys knew they had to keep their heads
if they wanted to take the win.
"This team has always shown heart. Just watching
them play today showed the importance of working as
a team and relying on your teammates to do their job".
Stephen 6 - Ops Township 5
Stephen Sonics got on the scoreboard early in their
first all -Ontario champiosnhip game with an unassist-
ed goal by Brayden Lord. A goal by Scott Davies with
an assist from Kenny Tilley made the score 2-0.
Six minutes later, Colin Sauder scored from Brent
Tatars and Tilley and it looked like Stephen was going
to have an easy time with their opponent.
Then the tables turned. Ten minutes later, Ops
scored twice in a one minute span which gave Stephen
only a one goal margin.
With only one minute left in the second period, Dix-
on put the home team ahead again with an unassisted
goal but Ops rallied back and replied with only four
seconds left in the period.
Lord started the scoring in the third period for Ste-
phen with an 'assist to Dixon but Ops bounced back
within one goal to make it 5-4.
Five minutes later, Wilson scored with help from
Davies and Henny Pfaff.
Ops sure gave the crowd an exciting finish. They
scored with only 1:05 left in the period to make it 6-5
and came very close to scoring the tieing goal after
Stephen was delivered a penalty. But the Sonics held
on to their win playing with a two-man disadvantage
and ended up winning the first game.
"The boys were nervous going into the game. You
could see the evidence in the first period but they
seemed to settle right down in the second" said coach
Dick Lord after the game.
Lord added" Goalie Gary Sauder certainly helped
our team win the game today. He made some outstand-
ing saves in net".
