EXETER 235-0800 • 237-3150 SPORTS Times -Advocate, April 5, 1995 Page 19 HOW THEY DID IT Exeter sweeps series Scott Keys gets winner with only 4 seconds left #14 Scott Keys WELLINGTON - It took a well placed time-out, a successful faceoff and some last minute hustle for the Exeter Legion Ladies Auxiliary Pee- wee team to win the third and final game of the playoffs to clinch the OMHA crown. Exeter defeated the Prince Edward County Kings last Friday in the On- tario Minor Hockey Association Peewee 'CC' Finals to claim the bragging rights of all Ontario Champions in the "CC" division. After beating the Kings 4-2 in the championship opener on March 25 at home in the South Huron Recreation Centre and 5-4 the fol- • lowing day, the Peewees were expected to win the champi- onship game in Prince Edward County hands down but the pesty Kings put up a tough fight using their size advantage to execute their physical and aggressive game plan. Exeter, however, turned up the jets and out -skated the larger King players with their speed. Exeter jumped to a two nothing lead in the first period with Scott Keys putting his team on the scoreboard first with a lit- tle help from his teammates Ryan Groot and Kian MacDougall who teamed up for a pair of assists. The Peewees scored again in the first period compliments of Mike Seip who was assisted by Jeff Campbell. Scoreless in the third period with overtime looming coach Bob McDo- nald called a time-out with only 23 seconds left to play in regulation time. The face off was deep in Exeter's end to the left of goalie Ryan Sullivan. Jeff Campbell won the decisive draw and Scott Keys brought the puck up to the blue line and passed it to Campbell who shot it into the Kings end. The Kings tried to clear it but Campbell foiled that play by blocking the puck keeping it in the King's zone. With Exeter pressing hard in the dying seconds of the third period Prince Edward scrambled to clear the puck but couldn't get past the mounting pressure the Peewees were apply- ing. A solid body check thrown by Jason Grenier forced the puck out to Kian MacDougall who let go a blistering slapshot at the King's goalie. The rebound bounced back and then went off a stick into the path of a well positioned Scott Keys standing right in front of the open net. For Keys it was an early Christmas present. Keys jumped on the rebound and sent it sailing past the sprawling Kings goalie with a wrist shot to score the game winner with only four seconds left on the clock. Even though the Peewees were up two games and were heavy favorites to win the series going into Prince Edward County, the team never lost the grit and determination that led them this far. "We had a lot of close games,". said captain Jeff Campbell referring to the semifinals where Exeter eliminated the feisty Mitchell Peewees in a hard-fought series. "We worked hard, we stuck together and we played as a team," said Campbell. According to trainer Bob Campbell the team went into the Prince Edward series "still on a high from beating Mitchell." Among other things, the Exeter Legion Ladies Auxiliary Peewees showed a lot of talent and self-discipline fighting their way to the top. "One of the referees from a previous playoff series went out of his way to comment on the excellent sportsmanship and discipline shown by our boys, it's a real tribute to the coaches," said Val Gould, grandmother of goalie Ryan Sullivan. Exeter hasn't won an OMHA Peewee title since the 1973-74 season. The title this year belongs to a very deserving team of talented young players, and for Exeter, it was a long time coming.
