By Fred Groves T -A staff PETROLIA - She's young, she's attractive and she's a police officer. Hensall's Chrystal Jones isn't afraid to admit that being female helped her land her new job - a con- stable with the Petrolia detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police. "Being female helped, I'm not shy to say that. My class was 50 percent female," said Jones. Just 21, she's already got two years of university criminology, the 16 -week Ontario Police College program and three months of on the job duty behind her. There are more and more female officers joining the OPP and for Jones, being female hasn't ham- pered her ability to perform the job. Many times it's a plus. "It scares me more when they guy talk about it. It really hasn't hit me. I haven't been in a fight or any- thing where my femininity has come into play. The guys are really protective. They know I'm female and there's some things I.can't handle." She has already handled one situation very well and received a letter of accomondation from the OPP district commander. Recalling the incident, Jones said it was only her fourth day shift alone. A call came in from a parent who suspected her infant had died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. "I was told I'd be the first officer there and I was," remembers Jones. "The mother handed me her baby and it was blue." Although the haby was already dead when Jones arrived, she still performed CPR in an attempt to re- vive the child. She did CPR, waited until the am- bulance arrived and later secured the area, a lot of responsibility for a rookie. "They (fellow officers) said some people with 25 years on the job couldn't have handled it." Hired in summer: Jones first became interested in police work after a co-op placement had her with the Exeter municipal force three years ago. After attending university she applied to the OPP and waited for the phone to ring and it did. "I got a phone call saying I was accepted and be- ing posted in Petrolia and that I was starting the week before Labour Day." Before heading to the 30 -person detachment at Petrolia, Jones had to take the 16 -week course in Brampton. "They threw a lot at you at once but the exam was nothing compared to what a university exam would be." At the police college there were people from dif- ferent forces from across the province. She made a lot of friends and stays in contact with her col- leagues. What does she like about the job? "I love everything about the job. Everything is new to me and it's exciting and a challenge." What doesn't she like about the job? Those gruelling 12 -hour night shifts cruising the roads where sometimes she won't pass another car for as long as three hours. "Night shifts are hard because sometimes around three or four in the morning you have to force your- self to stay awake." Prior to February, every shift she was on, Jones was accompanied by a more experienced officer. Now she goes alone but at night, they still double up. "There's a force policy that says after 10 p.m. you have to double up if cars are available. I'm not al- lowed to go out by myself yet." From South Huron District High School, to figure skating at a very high competitive level to uni- versity to being an OPP - Chrystal Jones has come a long way. 1 is ASTER CELEBRATION!
