Capital support
for school board
LONDON - Middlesex MPP Irene Mathyssen announced Friday
that $1,225,000 in jobsOntario Capital support will be provided the
Middlesex County Board of Education for repairs and improvements
to school buildings.
The funding will be provided over a three-year period, starting in
1996. A contribution of $398,000 from the school board will bring
the total to $1,623,000. •
The funds will be used to improve the safety, accessibility, and en-
ergy efficiency of schools. School boards will determine local prior-
ities based on program guidelines.
"Education is a vital public service and it costs money to maintain
our school facilities, said Mathyssen. "This funding helps make sure
that there's a high-quality learning environment for our students,
and it also provides jobs in our community. The provincial and local
contribution together means 28 person-years of work."
In 1996 the board will receive $408,373. Allocations for 1997 and
1998 will be updated to reflect changes in enrolment and facilities.
jobsOntario Capital supports the province's investment in educa-
tion and training infrastructure for more than three million full and
part time students. The Ontario government provides capital funds
of approximately $400 -million every year to school boards, and uni-
versities.
Training program will
create jobs in Wingham
WINGHAM - Up to $396,740
will be invested in Westcast In-
dustries due to the jobsOntario
Training program. Westcase will be
able to hire and train up to 47 long-
term unemployed people in Wing -
ham and Strathroy as a result of the
program.
Westast produces exhaust man-
ifolds for approximately 25 per
cent of all North American auto-
mobiles. The new employees will
work primarily as technicians in the
machining division.
The hiring and re-training will
also mean savings of a minimum of
$270,000 in social assistance costs
in one year.
Under the program, private em-
ployers are able to receive a train-
ing credit of $10,000 for each long-
term unemployed person hired for a
minimum of one year.
To date, the initiative has helped
to create over 70,000 new jobs and
save more than $200 million in so-
cial assistance costs.
