Those were the words of Brian Doidge of Ridgetown College speak- ing on March 21 to the annual Spring Crops Update in Seaforth spon- sored by the Huron Soil and Crop Improvement Association. He went on to say, "Chicago is optimistic about new crop corn prices. There appears to be a cutback in U.S. corn acreage. Feed usage in the United States will stay firm. Industrial use will rise mostly because of the manufaturing of ethanol. There is also going to be expansion in the hog industry that we can take advantage of. Doidge was not as optimistic about soybeans. There is a huge crop in the United States and he added, " There is a worry about the crop in South ' America and there is down pressure on Chicago prices." He talked about the expected switch in acreage from corn to soybeans and comparisons of input prices between Ontario and the United States. "The trade is trying to convince farmers to grow soybeans." Doidge continued, " We have higher priced fuel except for propane. Nitrogen source fertilizer prices are actually lower here than they are across the border and our herbicide prices are lower than they are in Michigan. U.S. farmers would be Netter off to come over here to buy chemicals." " I don't understand the huge increase in the cost of potash., because it comes from Canada. The railways charge $32 for carrying wheat and then get $60 for potash being delivered in the same cars." On the subject of railways, Doidge said, " CN and CP are both trying to abandon all rail lines. How are we going to get our product to market? Agriculture doesn't really mean anything to the railways. What rail sys- tem do we have left in Ontario? The only main line is from Sarnia to To- ronto with a Komoka to Windsor spur. You're rail connections are toast unless you are on the main line." Doidge also predicted a continued downfall of the Canadian dollar. When asked about when and how low, he replied, " Our dollar will con- tinue to be under pressure and in the next 18 months could fall as low as 68 cents. The financial markets don't have confidence ino ur lack of re- ducing deficits and Quebec will have a 'separate' card to play." Sale by Owner 3 + 1 bedroom one storey ranch with finished base- ment.
