A pair of one goal victories
beat Exeter's Huron
Tractor in the finals
EXETER - Other than the second game, the On-
tario Minor Hockey Association peewee 'CC' addi-
tional entry series between Exeter Huron Tractor
and Prince Edward County was very close.
Sunday night at the South Huron Recreation Cen-
tre the hosts lost the fourth game 2-1. Three of the
four games played saw Prince Edward County win
by just one goal.
"It was really frustrating. We had all kinds of
chances," said Exeter coach Mike Hogan. "They
(Huron Tractor) were hoping to win one at home."
In the final which saw OMHA representative
Dick Bennett present the runners-up plaque to Exet-
er, the hosts came out hitting hard as both Ryan
Ralph and Steve Rasenberg were physical.
With just 2:42 left in the second period Matt
Courneyea scored for the visitors as he put a re-
bound past Jeff Gooch. The Exeter goalie played
very well on the weekend and the first goal came af-
ter he had made the initial save.
Two minutes into the third frame Wes Mulder re-
directed a shot but four minutes later the hosts got
on the board when defenseman Dave Veal let a
blast go from the top of the circle.
Saturday in Exeter,
Rasenberg had two
goals in a slim 6-5
loss. Also scoring

The rec centre was full of spectators both Saturday
and Sunday for both the Huron Tractor and Legion

Prince Edward County takes in a bigger area than
Exeter.
"It's not sour grapes but next year they'll be clas-
sified 'B'," said Hogan.
Huron Tractor made the run to the finals after
beating New Hamburg in the semi-finals and Dur-
ham in the quarter -finals.

Local teams do well at
precision sectionals
LUCAN - Saturday morning the Ridgetown Le-
gion Reflections received a lareg applause because
they were able to skate without the assistance of
their music.
It happens and most precision teams are prepared
for it.
At the Western Ontario Sectionals Invitational
Precision Skating competition held in Lucan the Re-
flections recovered and finished their skate.
Right after they Left the ice, the Lucan Ice Gems
were on the ice and although they didn't have any
technical difficulties to hamper their performance,
they are always prepared.
"Well practice it. We'll go part way through a
number and then stop the music," -said Lucan coach
Shari Caruthers.
The Ice Gems took first place in the gold medal
roundof the Juvenile 'B' division on Saturday. The
event featured 40 teams and local teams did very
well.
Beside Lucan, the Exeter Classics were second in
the junior division while Ilderton Precisionnaires
were first in novice 'A' and the Ilderton Mini -Jets

Some things are harder to write than others - this is one of them.
As of March 31, I am no longer the sports reporter of the Exeter
Times -Advocate.
While many locals have already heard, I just figured that after nearly
five years of covering sports and news in and around Exeter, a farewell
column was necessary.
Like I say, some things are harder to write than others.
June 6, 1990 was my first day at the T -A and since then I have noth-
ing but great memories which I will keep forever.
Where to begin?
I guess I have tb look at the two major centres of sporting activity in
Exeter, the South Huron Recreation Centre and the South Huron Dis-
trict High School.
At the rec centre, which in my opinion, is one of the nicest facilties
in this part of the province, Lynne Farquhar, Cam Stewardson and the
rest of the staff take 4 lot of criticism but face ft folks, it's a top notch
recreation and sporting centre.
I got involved with several activities over the years (don't forget the
sneaker police) and enjoyed dropping in unannounced and having a
coffee. Thanks.
South Huron District High School - although I come from Essex,
home of the Red Raiders, I am now a Panther. That doesn't come from
coaching a year with the midget basketball team, it comes from fol-
lowing, covering, watching, supporting and learning.
When I first came to Exeter, football was big and it was always a
highlight of every week for me to go to the games just like Friday
night's in the winter with the Exeter Hawks became a favourite part of
the week.
I remember going to a football game and the next day, all the sta-
tistics from running and punting to who scored the touchdowns was
sent to me - along with a special gift which I still have.
Coach Ron Bogart sent me a Panthers ball cap with a note - "If you
are going to follow us, you have to become one of us," nice gesture
and I thank him very much for it.
The Bogart family is the number one sporting family in Exeter and I
am very proud to have met them.
When you mention the Panthers you have to always think of Jim
Workman and the girls field hockey team - three time defending cham-
pions. Jim is a great guy, that's why'he has a successful program.
Also at SHDHS, George McEwan, athletic director Pat Rowe, Dave
Cox and basketball guru Terry O'Rourke; all of these folks go above
and beyond.
There are others I have come in constant contact with that I would
like to say thanks to while space permits. If I've forgotten your name,
please don't be offended.
Fred Cook, Jim Allison, Derwyn Hodgins - Exeter fastball; Gary
Hartman, Brad Gregus, Katherine Ens, Albert VanDyken - Exeter mi-
nor baseball; Joe Fulop and Doug Fairbairn - Exeter Express; Peter
and Gloria McFalls - lawn bowling; Dick Lord - Exeter Centennials
and everything he does with Stephen Minor Hockey; Doug Pearson -
minor softball; Bart DeVries - minor soccer; Zurich Minor Hockey and
the fans for all their support; everyone contacted with the Lucan Irish,
the Exeter Hawks and the Exeter Mohawks.
Just a note on the latter, these three organizations are winning clubs
and I just wished I could have seen the Irish or the Hawks win a pro-
vincial title. Oh well, there will always be the memories of the Stephen
Sharks, the Exeter Generals and the Zurich Storm.
A special thanks to the coaches who always dropped their sco-
resheets in on time, you made my job a lot easier and you were the rea-
son the kids got their names in the paper.
To the kids at the rinks, on the ball fields - thanks for making me
part of your lives
Speaking of kids - that's who I am going to miss the most.
Exeter and surrounding area have sent some very talented people on
to higher level of sports. Steve DuBarry, Perry and Paul Pooley, Dave
Shaw, Derek and Dan Masse, Randy Johnson, Jason Heywood, Cara
Gardner, Joel Campbell, are just a few to mention.
To those that I have had the honour to coach in baseball, basketball
and hockey - I had fun and I'll remember a lot of times in cold arenas
close and far away from home.
Keep in touch.
