Leanne Erb - Hensall
"I think it's the right thing to
do because there won't be
any fish left for us to fish"
Tracey Kirk - Exeter
"It's about time! There's not
enough fish to support
Canadians and there isn't going
to be enough if the Spanish
keep over -fishing?
Do you believe that
Canada is doing the
right thing stopping
Spanish trawlers from
fishing Turbot in
international waters off
the coast of
Newfoundland?
Irene Dunn - Zurich
"I don't think we should let
them come in. Let our
Canadians do the fishing."
John McDowell - Grand Bend
"I think it's a good idea. We're
paying big money to people on
welfare who can't fish because of
the depletion of fishing stock"
Bill Johnston - Zurich
"Excellent! I think we have to
maintain a standard to protect
our fishing stock even though
they are fishing in international
waters."
John Baker - Hensall
"Great idea - we've got to
protect our fishing."
Luise Hoffman - Grand Bend
"The Spanish seem to be the
scapegoat. I don't think the
Spanish fishing methods are
any different from our
Canadian fishermen"
Allan Bullock - Exeter
"The Spanish provoked it -
they're fishing too much"

TO THE PEOPLE OF GRAND BEND
RE: UPCOMING HARBOUR STUDY PUBLIC MEETING
Oil Friday, March 31st, 1995, there will be a Public Meeting at the
Grand Bend Legion beginning at 7P:00 p.m. The purpose of this
meeting Is to discuss and review the Consultant's report concerning
the proposed upgrade and expansion of Grand Bend's Harbour
facilities. To date, there appears to be some concern and
misunderstanding about the Study and what actually will happen if
and when Council approves or accepts the Study and its
recommendations.
The concept of a harbour expansion was first put forth in a Village's
Strategic Plan adopted by Council in 1993. In discussions with
appropriate Government agencies, the Village was advised to
undertake a study to determine whether or not such upgrade and
expansion was feasible. Hence, the necessity of this Study.
The Study delves into many facets of the community and makes
recommendations for future development in the Village's harbour
activities. It also identifies some major issues that must be addressed
before the expansion can occur. Such issues are:
(a) financial assistance,
(b) shoreline impact, and
(c) land ownership.
Clearly, before commitments for expansion can be made there is a
significant amount of work that will have to be done, assuming
Council approves or accepts the Study and its recommendations.
Such work will require funding and Council will have to determine
how to obtain the necessary funding.
It is my belief that this Study is just an initial step In a long process
that the Village will have to travel before any commitments, finandal
or otherwise, can be made to incur the multi-million dollar cost
outlined in the Study.
I hope residents of the area will attend the meeting to get a better
understanding of the proposals and the process Involved.
