Jos Bervoets, the proprietor of Four Seasons Jewellery Design, has recently returned from Nashville where he recorded three singles. Bervoets has been involved with music since he was four years old, growing up in Holland. His sib- lings were performing long before their younger brother was dis- covered by an agent who couldn't help but hear the small child strum- ming madly in his room on his uku- lele. "I was always sent out of the room when the promoters would come to our house and 1 would be sitting in my bedroom playing my ukulele like crazy. At one point in time I was discovered." After he came to Canada in 1972, Bervoets formed a band in London which played popular rock music of the era. He was the vocalist of the group which covered songs by groups like Bad Company, ZZ Top, Pink Floyd and Yes. When Bervoets met his wife Tin- ka and they had two children, he slowed down his performing career to focus on jewellery design. He musician travels to Nashville continued to play in folk groups but his lifestyle had changed dramat- ically. A marriage encounter week- end two years ago, inspired Ber- voets to write music again. "I haven't stopped since," he said. The three songs he recorded in Nashville with the help of a friend in the business are Tell Me Why, / Need You and Hey You. Bervoets hopes the (jotter will be the one which will r very big. • "I hope to have a CD ready to go within the next year," he said. He describes his style as classic rock, with country and folk over- tones. Influences in Bervoets' early career include bands like Muddy Waters and the James Cotton Blues Band. In fact, he learned how to play the blues harp from James Cotton who later gave him his col- lection of harmonicas. Bervoets wants to make a differ- ence to the upcoming generation. He is now very careful with the lyr- ics he writes. Once a CD made, he hopes to re- lease in Europe and Canada. Closer to home, Bervoets has organized a group of local talent including Jim- my -Lee Fuller, a guitarist who lives in Exeter. "He is just an incredible musician, " said Bervoets. His personal beliefs are similar to Fuller's which comes across in the work. "I don't want to bring any neg- ativity within my work. I want it all to be positive. Positive mental attitude is what's going to give us results," he said. He hopes they can do workshops at the high school and the public school to let students see what can be done. Creativity and positive thinking drive the music Bervoets makes. The process of writing again has helped him to grow as a person and become stronger. "By writing down the, things 1 believe in, 1 pretty well have to live them or else I am just a hypo- crite." He is also demonstrating by ex- ample to his own children what can be accomplished. The slower pace in a small town has allowed for the creative instinct to be re- developed in an older, more ex- perienced and perhaps wiser art- ist. Earlier thls month Jos Bervoets recorded three original songs in Nashville. He here in the studio. is shown 11. BEST VAN DEALS OF THE YEAR!
