Irish bow to Lakers in seventh game
By Fred Groves
T -A staff
PT. STANLEY - It may have
been St. Patrick's Day but the luck
of the Irish certainly wasn't with
Lucan Friday night in Pt. Stanley.
The host Lakers won 7-4, win-
ning the seventh and deciding game
of the best -of -seven OHA Junior
Development League west division
semi-finals.
Pt. Stanley had to put together
back-to-back wins as Lucan had a
three -games -to -two lead heading
into last Wednesday night's game
in Lucan which saw the Lakers win
3-2.
During the regular season which
saw the Lakers finish atop the west
loop with a 29-9-2 rcord, the Irish
did not win one of the five games
between the two teams.
Friday's game saw the Irish slip
behind 2-1 after the first period and
they trailed 4-3 after 40 minutes.
The Lakers who showboated a bit
after each goal, added an empty-
netter.
"I am disappointed, we blew our
chance Wednesday," said Irish
coach Scott Bogart. "You can't give
a team like that a second chance."
Lucan started the 1994-95 season
with an 0-11-1 record in its first 12
games but quickly turned things
around and won their last nine reg-
ular season games before sweeping
Seaforth in the opening round of
the playoffs.
"The second half of the season
we were the team to beat," said Bo-
gart whose team moved from last to
fourth place and finished with a 21-
18-1 record. "We weren't the under-
dogs," he added.
Friday's game saw Lucan's de-
fence come up with a strong of-
fensive game as Bryan Steifel, Wil
Giles and Keith Robson scored
while veteran forward Jeremy Je-
Pt. Stanley defenseman Jamie Hicks collided with Lucan goal-
ie Steve Watson in last Wednesday's game. There was no
penalty called.

who set up the goal took a chop in
the stomach from Lambeth goalie
Jeff Baldacchino.
Exeterhad a powerplay, pulled
Knight, but instead of getting the
tying goal, watched as Watson and
MacKinnon scored into the empty
net.
"I think we were a better team
over seven games. I think the re-
fereeing was the difference in two
games down there," said Reving-
ton.
Big win at home: Facing elim-
ination Friday night at the South
Huron Recreation Centre, Hawks
defensman Trevor Shadbolt scored
on a powerplay to open the scoring.
It was his first of three on the night
in front of a near capacity crowd.
Mauer set up Steve Farquhar and
Shadbolt walked in to make it 3-0
after 20 minutes.

In the second, Lambeth got some-
what frustrated as Mark Willis
threw Burns' stick into the Lancers
bench and Jason VanGeel was
ejected for checking -from -behind.
Also scoring for the Hawks were
Jeff Glavin, Mark Livermore and
Shayne" Robinson. McCann and
Chris Kennedy each had a pair of
assists.
Questionable call: Last Wednes-
day night in Lambeth the hosts won
4-3 in overtime. A penalty -filled
game saw Kevin Kerr score the
winner on a powerplay as Jamie
Cornish was in the penttlty box for
roughing.
Revington said later he was sur-
prised that the referee made this
call as he had let a lot go earlier in
the game.
"He (Cornish) shoved the guy, it
was unbelievable. The play was al-
ready dead."
Scoring for Exeter in Wednes-
day's game were Livermore,
McCann and Kennedy.

Answering for the Lakers were
Mark Steele with two, Rob Ayl-
sworth, Mike Camp, Mike Rush,
Chris Anderson and Steve Wiacek.
In the final two games of the se-
ries, the Irish had their trouble put-
ting the puck in the net but Bogart
didn't seem overly concerned about
that.
"We generate a lot of scoring
chances. Maybe it was a lackof
concentration," he said.
Turn the tables: Last Tuesday in
Pt. Stanley, the Irish won big 7-4
but the next night, back in Lucan in
front of a very large supportive
crowd, the hosts couldn't cap the
series.
A goal by Giles and a Jim Stan-
ton backhander made it 2-0 in the
first period of Wednesday's game
but that would be all the scoring the
Irish could get in Game Six.
"We had them on the ropes after
the first period and we let them
back in," said Bogart.
With three minutes left in the
first period Lucan goalie Steve
Watson went behind his net to clear
the puck and was met very hard by
Lakers' defenseman Jamie Hicks.
While the fans and the Irish
screamed for a penalty, none was
given out and when the commotion
was over, Steifel was sent to the
box for roughing.
"It didn't get him off his game, it
wasn't a factor," said Bogart.
The Lakers chipped away and 39
seconds into the second period,
Midget Generals eliminated
EXETER - A pair of losses to Mitchell eliminated the Exeter RSD
Generals from the OMHA midget 'CC' semi-finals on the weekend.
On Sunday, Mitchell blanked the Generals 4-0 and earlier in the
week were beaten 5-1. Bill Hodge teamed with David Farquhar for the
lone RSD goal.
The Generals host London Rebels in an exhibition game tonight and
will be in the Shamrock League 'A' championship this weekend.

Scott Faulkner flipped one up over
Watson. It was tied 2-2 as Rush
scored.
Lucan had a couple of chances to
go ahead as Derek Greenlee
stepped in from the blueline but
was stopped and later Dave Jenken
was stopped on a good chance.
The winning goal came with
about 12 minutes left when Ander-
son put one through Watson's legs.
Graduating players: The Irish
bid farewell to a pair of players on
the weekend as both Greg DePrest
and Scott Riddell were the over-
agers this year.
DePrest, a London native finishes
six years with the green -and -white
and capped off his final year by
winning the .west division scoring
title with 69 points in just 29
games. Riddell, who was a penalty -
killing specialist leaves the team af-
