Grand Bend enters into
road lease agreement
GRAND BEND - Back in Feb-
ruary, Grand Bend resident Art
Hodgins came to council looking
for a lease agreement between the
village and himself in regards to his
Lakeroad property.
Apparently Hodgins' property has
been encroaching onto a road al-
lowance but as he pointed out, the
village is not using that land.
"I would appreciate knowing
what Grand Bend's thrust is for de-
velopment," said Hodgins who re-
turned to council on Monday.
He pointed out that through the
village's new waterfront develop-
ment study, which as pointed out
by mayor Cam Ivey is only a fea-
sibility study, a new harbour could
be built off the north beach.
That would mean that more peo-
ple would be using the south beach
and the road allowance which has
Hodgins has encroached would be-
come more important.
A road allowance is 66 feet and
right now, the road in question near
Hodgins property is 50 feet.
"If that 15 feet is not really ours
than we park illegally. If I trim the
trees, it's on your (village's) prop-
erty," said Hodgins.
While it was agreed to enter into
a three-year lease agreement with
Hodgins, it was noted that the
agreement would not need a notice
period for renewal.
"I don't see any reason why we
can't enter into a lease agreement,"
said councillor Bob Mann.
"If we were going to do some-
thing it would take more than a
year," said councillor Barbara
Wheeldon of future use for the
road.
Hodgins is also encroaching onto
the public beach but a seawall on
his property helps fight off erosion.
Ivey said that is a whole separate
situation as he said he doesn't know
who owns the beach, the village or
the Ministry of Natural Resources.
