Large crowd attends
baptism in Crediton
CREDITON - A large crowd was
in attendance at Zion Urtited
Church in Crediton Sunday morn-
ing to help the parents of two chil-
dren celebrate their baptismals.
Baptized by Rev. Ed Laksmanis
were Shea Rosemary Leigh Robin-
son and Kyle Daniel Eastabrook.
As has been the practice in the
last two months, many of those at
the Sunday morning service en-
joyed a coffee hour in the Sunday
School rooms. This short time of
coffee and sweet goodies will con-
tinue each Sunday morning.
Friday night more than 40 church
members and friends and families
enjoyed a very informal St. Pat-
rick's pot luck dinner
The entertainment was provided
by Dorothy and Jim Chapman of
Exeter as they showed slides and
talked about their trip to Thailand
and the distribution of 5,000 bed
kits for underpriviliged children un-
der the auspices of (S.C.A.W.)
Sleeping Children Around the
World.
Senior choir members will gather
for their regular practice tonight,
Wednesday at 8 p.m.
Members of the young adult
group will meet at 2 p.m. on Sun-
day, March 26 at 2 p.m. for a
couple of games of bowling at the
Towne and Country Lanes in Zu-
rich. This will be followed by a pot
luck lunch.
On Easter Sunday morning, April
16, members of the youth group
and the United Church Women
will be joining forces to provide
the annual Easter morning break-
fast at 8 a.m.
Former resident passes
Word has been recently of the
death of Eleanor, Mrs. William
Oestreicher, a former resident of
Main street in Crediton.
After her husband's death in
1977, she moved to Exeter in 1979
and then three years later to Don
Mills. The funeral was held March
4 in Don Mills. She was 89.

VARNA - The Stan Lee Club will meet April 5 at 12 noon for lunch at
the Blue Fountain in Clinton with bowling to follow at 2 p.m. Contact
Ivan McClymont a few days ahead if you can go.
The Trends Youth group will meet Thursday, March 30 at Brucefield
United Church at 7:30 p.m. They will be working with crafts with Ester
Cantelon in preparation for an upcoming hake and craft sale.
Local girls, Heather and Valerie Laurie and Heather Beierling have just
returned home from a ten-day holiday in Kissimmee, Florida with the Sea -
forth All Girls Marching Band. While there they performed in Busch Gar-
dens and the Epcot Ccntre and enjoyed time in the Walt Disney Theme
parks. They reported very hot weather with a bit of rain.
Remember to get your auction tickets for April 1 for the Huron Centen-
nial Parent Council. Tickets are $9 each and include a cold buffet during
the evening. There will also be door prizes. The auction will be held at the
Stanley Township complex. Tickets are available in Bayfield through
Brandon's Hardware or in Brucefield through Millington's or also through
any school family. Proceeds to repair and buy new playground equipment
for Huron Centennial School.
The family fun night sponsored by the Stanley Township Rec Commit-
tee was successful again this year. Dances were won by Pam Crete, Darren
Love, Amanda Elliot, Lindsay Love, Danny Peck, Nick Robinson, Jenni-
fer Smith, Le-anne Stephenson, Stacey Consitt, Megan Robinson, Jason
Beierling and Scott Wilson. The Peck Family won the adult prize.
The next event is the tenth annual canoe rally to be held Sunday, April 2
and this year anyone registering a canoe will have a chance on winning a
free one, so get your canoes all shined up.

Youth groups plan swimming party
Junior Youth and Messengers are
meeting at Kicks this Thursday.

THAMES ROAD - Rev. Jim Allsop conducted the
Third Sunday of Lent church service on Sunday morn-
ing.
The responsive reading was taken from the service
book "Strength for the Day", Psalm 63.
The choir sang "A Prayer for the Givers" accompa-
nied by organist Agnes Bray.
The children's hymn was sung 'Give me oil in my
lamp' and Rev. Allsop told the children a story "Be
Careful, Don't Blame Other People".
The scripture reading from the Old Testament Isaiah
55:1-9 and from the New Testament I Corinthians
10:1-13, was`i ad by John Miner. Rev. Allsop read
from the Gospel of Luke 13:1-9 and the title of his ser-
mon was "A Second Chance". The closing hymn
"Guide Me 0 Thou Great Jehovah."
Coming events
On Thursday, March 23 the Junior Youth and Mes-
sengers will be having a swimming party at Kicks
Aquatic Centre at 7:00 p.m. Members are reminded to
bring a loonie.
The Senior Youth Group have a new name - ETZ
WEK - like a license plate, standing for Elimville,
Thames Road, Zion, Woodham,Exeter and Kirkton
churches from which the young people come.
Personals
Congratulations to Murray and Beatrice Dawson on
the birth of a new granddaughter Lindsay Nicole, a
daughter for Larry and Melissa Dawson, a sister for
two brothers. Lindsay was born on Tuesday.
Brendan and Allyssa Moran of Toronto holidays last
week with their grandparents Lorne and Pat Ballan-
tyne.
Lesley and Jeremy Baxter of Mitchell visited at the
Richardson home and the Duncan home the past week.
Dennis and Joan Duncan an Doug of Ottawa visited
last week with the former's parents Jack and Jean Dun-
can.
Clarence and Isabel Thomson of Woodham, Glenn
and Dorothy Jeffery and Tammy Rohde were supper
guests on Sunday evening with Bill and Rhoda Rohde,
for an early surprise 40th wedding anniversary celebra-
tion for Glenn and Dorothy Jeffery. Congratulations.
Speaking
winners
ARVA - The finals of the Mid-
dlesex County Effective Speaking
Contest were held at Medway
High School Tuesday March 7.
County convener, Ron Van Be -
lois, of Biddulph Central School,
chaired this event which culmi-
nated public speaking activities in
45 schools throughout Middlesex
County public, private and separ-
ate. schools. Tuesday's final in-
volved twelve elementary school
students, who had previously
placed first or second at both their
school and district levels. In the
secondary division, two speakers
participated.
Winner of the elementary con-
test was Jessica May, of Ekcoe
School. Heather Pearson, from
Medway High School, was the
winner of the secondary contest.
