Grant fo r
services
announced
TORONTO - Town and Country
Homemakers will receive
$201,100 to expand services for
seniors and people who are physi-
cally challenged. Paul Klopp MPP
for Huron announced Thursday on
behalf of the Health Minister Ruth
Grier. The funding will go to ex-
pand on-site personal support and
homemaking services for seniors
and people who are physically
challenged.
"This $206,100 expansion will
give more people in Huron a high
level support in their residences,"
Mr. Klopp said. He continued,
I "This money will mean that people
who would otherwise have to go to
a nursing home because of special
needs will be able to stay at home.
This is better for the individual
and better for the taxpayer. This
type of support will cost less than
half what a nursing home bed
would cost."
Paul Klopp said that he was
pleased that Town & Country
Homemakers have received the
grant. It allows them to provide a
more intensive service beyond the
excellent services which they pro-
vide already. Paul Klopp said,
"This is the one government that is
not turning its back on the needs of
seniors, and it is another example
of new ways to provide service
and to make it cost-effective for
the tazpayer."
Earlier today, Mrs. Grier an-
nounced that Bill 173, the Long -
Term Care Act, will be proclaimed
March 31. The act creates the legal
framework for local centres, which
will provide consumers and their
families with co-ordinated services
'and the convenience of one-stop
access to community-based servic-
es.
"We have achieved two major
milestones in the reform of our
long-term care system," Mrs. Grier
said. "Weve increased funding for
community services, and we've
made Bill 173 a reality. "these
changes are absolutely necessary if
the province is going to meet the
growing needs of its aging popula-
tion," she added.
Paul Klopp said, "After listening
to seniors I know that the passage
of Bill 173 is something they
want." He said that it will build on
the excellent home care system
which we have in Huron.
The number of people over the
age of 85 is expected to grow by
125 percent in the next 15 years.
The government is changing the
system now to make sure that it
can provide quality health and
home care services to those who
need it.
Thursday's announcement is part
of a $6 million increase to 1994-95
government funding for communi-
ty support services in Ontario. The
funding for community have equal
access to the services they need, no
matter where they live in Ontario.
