Rock music blared and over 200 spectators watched as Listowel's Shawn Conly put on a slam dunk- ing demonstration at the start of the Huron -Perth senior boys all-star basketball game last Tuesday night. It was a time to showboat, a time to strut their stuff and that's what the fans seem to marvel at. "It gives some exposure for the kids and it's a nice way to finish the season," said SHDHS basketball coach Terry O'Rourke, organizer of the event. For the players, it was a little dif- ferent as the games, both senior and junior became quite competitive. There has always been a rivalry be- tween the two counties and at the all-star game, it came to a head. ()Rourke decided to have the games divided in 20 -minute halves rather than the traditional four, eight -minute quarters. One South Huron junior player seemed to like it. "It made the game seem longer. I liked it, it kept going," said Luke Sims. Other Panthers' all-stars in the game were Mark Bell and David Farquhar. The Huron junior all-stars were beaten by their counterparts from Perth quite easily, 97-57 but throughout the game, Sims said the Huron team wanted to stay in it. "We wanted to keep it close but we couldn't run with them," he said of Perth's speed. Perth held a slim 27-25 lead in the first half but just two -and -a -half minutes later they really started to fill the hoop and scored nine quick points to put the game out of reach. South Huron's junior team won the Huron Conference and ad- vanced to the WOSSA tournament where they were blasted 87-34 by the top ranked St- Thomas Central Elgin. "It was a little disappointing but we were playing the first seed," said Sims. Lots or height: The senior all-star matchup saw a lot of height on both sides but by far the dominant player was Listowel Lords' Conly who had 20 points to lead the Perth side. While a few of the Perth players decided to cut off their sleeves, re- vealing their biceps, it was the Hu- ron side which flexed its muscles. Huron led by 20 points with about 10 minutes left to go but Perth chipped away, just coming up short 79-77. Although the Perth team had the height advantage, Wingham F.E. Madill senior coach Chris Coul- thard who guided the Huron all- stars, said before the game he was hoping for his all-stars to defend last year's win. Representing South Huron at the game were Dennis McCann who had a strong game with 10 points while guard Bryan McAllister add- ed seven. Hockey team out at WOSSA After beating both the Goderich Vikings and the Clinton Central Huron Redmen to win the Huron - Perth hockey title, the Panthers were disappointed last Tuesday in Tillsonburg. Tim Mauer Panthers were hammered 8-2 by London ,city champions Lucas Vi- kings. Ben Armstrong and Jason Hodgson had the South Huron goals. "They played well enough, we missed some chances early and got down' a bit," said South Huron coach Dave Cox. "Lucas was a strong team, I thought we'd do bet- ter than we did" Lucas went on to beat Aylmer East Elgin 9-1 and advance to the OFSAA championship tournament in Peterborough. And what of the future of the Panthers hockey team? St. Marys, the lone Perth county school has in- dicated it may not want to return next season. That would put the league down to a Huron only league. Cox doesn't know what kind of team the Panthers will ice next winter. "We could have a good nucleus but it depends on what happens with Junior D' and Junior 'B'," said Cox. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Crediton 1 ;
