Lancers. wearing Hawks down
The semi-final series is even at two games

LAMBETH - Having three key
regulars out of the lineup hurt the
Exeter Hawks on Sunday as they
lost a close 3-2 decision to the host
Lambeth Lancers.
The loss ties the series at two
games each with Game Five sched-
uled for tonight (Wednesday) in
Lambeth and it's back to Exeter on
Friday at 8:30 p.m. If a seventh
game is necessary, it will be played
Sunday in Lambeth.
Missing from Sunday's game
were last year's leading scorer
Shayne Robinson (pneumonia), Na-
than Blight (broken ankle) and
Brian Gardner (vacation).
Commenting on Robinson's con-
dition, Exeter coach Dave Reving-
ton said, "it's day-to-day. It looks
like Mark Bell broke his ankle.
We're getting worn down."
Also absent in the fourth game
were Mark Glavin (vacation) and
Chad Gilfillan (flu). While those
.two don't see a lot of ice time Bell's
absence could hurt a lot as the roo-
kie defenseman has played very
well.
There was no score in the fust pe-
riod on Sunday but very early in
the second, Exeter veteran centre
Sean McCann scored his seventh of
the post -season when he teamed
with linemates Chris Kennedy and
Jeff Glavin.
Lambeth's Kevin Kerr got his
fust of two to tie it but a minute lat-
er Glavin sent the visitors into the
second break up by one as he
scored from McCann.
Kerr scored with 7:19 left in the
game and then Arvin Kim netted
the winner five minutes later.

LUCAN - They call it the second season for
a reason - it's very different from the regular
season.
The Lucan Irish are finding this out very
quickly. Sunday afternoon the host Irish lost
5-1 to the visiting Pt Stanley Lakers. Two pre-
vious games saw the Irish win a pair of post -
season games.
It just goes back -and -forth and the result is a
very interesting OHA Junior Development
League west division semi-final series which,
heading into last night's (Tuesday) game in Pt.
Stanley was tied two games each.
Game Six goes tonight in Lucan at 8:15 and
if necessary the seventh game will be played
Friday in Pt. Stanley.
"They are pretty explosive. We knew they
could blow one open. We played good the first
two periods," said Lucan coach Scott Bogart.
Sunday's game, played in front of a very
large Lucan-backed crowd, got out of hand
very quickly when Lakers' Mike Camp inter-
fered with Lucannetminder Steve Watson and
Derek Greenlee' stepped in and the two
squared off.
Watson had to put up with a lot of abuse in
the first period as he was met with a two-
handed slash in the stomach by Andy Massa.
It was a wild first period which saw coaches
from both benches yelling at each other.
It was 1-0 after the fust period as the Lakers
crowded the front of the net but rookie Dave
Jenken tied it up in the second when he picked
up the puck at the Irish blueline, went all the
way down and put an ice level shot past Lance
Chartrand's stick side.
But that was the only time the puck would
get past Chartrand as the Irish couldn't click.
"We stopped skating and we stopped bump -
Pt. Stanley's Mike Camp (10) was ready to take on all comers from Lucan follow-
ing a fight during Sunday's game.
Junior, college
players have a
very good year
STRATHROY - His team may not have made the Western Junior
'B' playoffs but it was still a successful year for Jeff MacLean.
The forward turned defenseman was named the Strathroy Rockets
'Rookie -of -the -Year' recently as he had five goals and ended his first
junior season with 25 points.
The Exeter Minor Hockey Association product was also nominat-
ed for the league's top rookie honors.
Good season for Fairweather: Shawn Fairweather of Lucan who
played this past season with the St. Marys Junior B' Lincolns was
tied for fourth in team scoring as he had 12 goals and 34 assists. The
promising rookie also collected nine points including three goals in
the post -season.
Other Lucan connections, Dwayne Price who played for the Junior
'D' Irish had 17 points during the regular season while second -year
forward Paul O'Shea was bothered by injuries and managed 29
points.
The big surprise is defenseman Corey Smith who just turned 16.
Smith, also from Lucan, the rookie had seven goals and 23 points in
the regular season and a pair of goals in the playoffs.
Smith is rated by the Central Scouting as is former Irish blueliner
Dave Mancari who played this year with Orangeville.
College hockey: Huron Park native Steve DuBarry capped off a
good sophomore season at Col..: to University in New York as he
had four goals, three assists and six penalty minutes in the 23 games
he appeared in.
The past weekend saw the Red Raiders beat Vermont in the best -
of -three series and advance to the ECAC finals in Lake Placid.
Exeter's Jason Heywood and the Western Ontario Mustangs failed
in their bid to win the CIAU championship as they were beaten in
the semi-finals.
ing them. I think three of their goals were up
the middle," said Bogart.
Watson was spectacular in the second period
and made at least three huge saves when the
Lakers were playing with the man advantage.
It was 1-1' after 40 minutes before the Pt. Stan-
ley flood gates opened up.
This series, which will see the winner take on
either Lambeth or Exeter, started last Tuesday in
Pt. Stanley with a 6-3 win for the hosts. The next
day Lucan won at home 5-4 in double overtime
and the Irish made it two in a row as they won
Friday in Pt. Stanley, 5-2.
"They (Lakers) were expecting to put us away
in four or five games but they're in a series," said
Bogart whose Irish lost all five regular season
games to the Lakers.
Sunday's game had a couple bf scary moments
in it as Lucan's top scorer Greg DePrest was met
with a cross -stick to the back of the neck by for-
mer Irish defenseman Jamie Hicks.
Very late in the game, DePrest and Scott
Faulkner collided knee -to -knee at the blueline
and both needed help to get off the ice. Bogart
said DePrest is okay and was expected to be in
the lineup last night.
All tied up: After dropping the fust game of
the series last Tuesday, the Irish came back at
home the next night with a thrilling 5-4 double
overtime win.
The first game of the best -of -seven series
snapped a 13 -game winning streak for the Irish.
In their past 17 games, Lucan is 15-2.
Like he did in a dramatic game against the
Seaforth Centenaires, rookie blueliner Wil Giles
scored the winner while Christian Criel, DePrest,
Jeremy Jemec and Scou Riddell also connected.
Friday night in Pt Stanley, Watson made over
50 saves as it was 2-1 after the first period and 5-
1 after 40 minutes of play. DePrest led the way
with a goal and two assists while Milce Robb,
Steve Hudson, Steve Matthews and Jemec also
scored.

Lancers wins in this best -of -seven
series have been at home.
"It allows their defence to be-
come more of a factor. They can
utilize their size a little better," said
Revington.
Goaltending has become a key
factor in this series, as it is in most
playoff games. At one end, Exeter's
Dahien Kints is playing very well
and in the past three games has
only allowed seven goals.
"I think everyone can see he's
playing well. He was on his back
six times, they were all over him,"
said Revington.

regular season, is leading the Lanc-
ers.
"He butt -ends everyone that
comes near him. The referee has to
clamp down on that," complained
Revington.
Now best -of -three: With the se-
ries tied at two games each, it now
boils down to a best -of -three situa-
tion. So far the home team has won
in the four previous contests, two
of the final three are being played
in Lambeth.
After the Lancers won the open-
er, 5-2 the Hawks roared back last
Tuesday in Exeter with'a very dom-
inating 9-3 win.
• Kerinedy led the way with a big
four -point game on two goals and a
pair of assists. Nathan Burns also
clicked twice with singles to Mark
Livermore, Steve Farquhar, Ray
Cousineau, Glavin and McCann.
Robinson had three assists.
Revington said the Lancers will
be tough to beat and explained,
"they weren't in second place for
nothing."
Friday in Exeter Kints played a
strong game allowing just one goal
in a 4-1 victory. Scoring for the
Hawks were McCann, Jeff Glavin,
Livermore and defenseman Trevor
Shadbolt with a nice end-to-end
rush.
